NGC 6826 is a planetary nebula located about 2000 ly away in the constellation Cygnus. The two brighter parts coming from centre are FLIERs. Fast Low-Ionization Emission Regions are basically jets of fast moving gas moving from the centre of the nebula.

NGC 2438 is a planetary nebula located about 1400 ly away in the constellation of Puppis. Though it appears in the open cluster M46, it is not a member of the cluster. It is considerably closer as the cluster is about 5000 ly away and so is a foreground object.

M9 is a globular cluster located about 25.8 kly away in the constellation of Ophiuchus. Globular clusters orbit our Galaxy in its halo. They have also been detected orbiting other galaxies.

M51 is a spiral galaxy located about 25 Mly away in the constellation of Cannes Venatici. Easily found in a small telescope, it's an example of interacting galaxies as the upper part is a second, smaller galaxy.

M6 is an open cluster located about 1600 ly away in the constellation of Scorpius. Open clusters help us understand how stars evolve as their members were all formed more or less at the same time. It allows a snapshot of how different masses of stars evolve compared to others in the cluster.

Stephan's Quintet is a group of 5 galaxies located about 250 Mly away in the constellation of Pegasus. Only 4 of the 5 galaxies are members of the same galactic group. NGC 7320 (galaxy lower right) is only about 39 Mly away and is a foreground object.

NGC 6058 is a planetary nebula located about 11 kly away in the constellation of Hercules. It is a star that has blown off it's outer layers. What was the star's core is now a central star that emits much UV light which causes the blown off gas to glow as the nebula.

Uranus is the 7th planet of our solar system. With Neptune, Uranus is one of two ice giant planets in our solar system. Uranus' rotational axis is highly tilted to its orbital plane at about 82 degrees (the Earth's is at 23.5 degrees) meaning that it rotates on its side.

M28 is a globular cluster located about 18 kly away in the constellation of Sagittarius. It looks reddish in this image as from the telescope location it was very close to the southern horizon. The Earth's atmosphere scattered away much of the blue light, making the objects appear redder.

The band of faint light we see across a portion of the night sky is the Milky Way. It is our Galaxy, a barred spiral galaxy that we see from inside the disk. When you look at the constellation Sagittarius you are looking towards the core of our Galaxy.

IC1747 (small blue dot at centre) is a planetary nebula located about 9800 ly away in the constellation of Cassiopeia. Planetary nebula are stellar remnants, stars around the mass of the Sun in their death throes. Eventually only a white dwarf star will remain.

NGC 2024, the Flame Nebula, is an emission nebula located about 1350 ly away in the constellation of Orion.

The very bright star in the image is Alnitak, the easternmost star in Orion's belt.

One of the ways we search for objects in the solar system is to take an image, wait for a period of time, then take another image and see what moved.

@mdm@mcnamarii.town There are many stars greater than 1.4 solar masses. Hypothetically up to 150 solar masses. For a white dwarf, held up by electron degeneracy pressure and not the pressure from fusion reactions, once you get to 1.4 solar masses you blow apart.

Telescopes need to track across the sky to compensate for the Earth's rotation. However, this is often not enough as irregularities in the telescope drive systems can cause tracking errors.

So for long exposures telescopes also have to be guided (nowadays by a computer) to compensate for this. Left image guided, right image unguided.

M48 is an open cluster located about 2500 ly away in the constellation of Hydra.

It's about 425 million years old making it middle aged as open clusters go.

M59 (right) and M60 (left) are two galaxies located in the Virgo galaxy cluster.

Galaxies tend to be in clusters and the Virgo cluster is a large nearby one. The image spans about 8 deg and has about 13 visible galaxies in it. The second image marks the galaxies.

Alnitak, the bright star in the image, is the easternmost star (on the left from the N hemisphere) of Orion's belt and is about 1260 ly away.

Just behind it at about 1360 ly are the Flame and Horsehead nebulae. Both are part of the muc larger molecular cloud known as the Orion Complex.

M49 is an elliptical galaxy located about 56 Mly away in the constellation of Virgo.

M49 is a member of the Virgo cluster of galaxies. It is the most luminous member of that cluster.

M82 is a spiral galaxy located about 12 Mly away in the constellation of Ursa Major.

Considered a starburst galaxy, M82 is undergoing massive amounts of star formation. This is likely due to the gas and dust in the galaxy being compressed by tidal forces from nearby M81.
