@isonno@mastodon.social @waxy@xoxo.zone @textfiles@mastodon.archive.org @anildash@me.dm I'd put more stock in the Flickr Foundation than most other services at this point. And yes, there's always the risk someone pulls-the-plug unexpectedly; Remember Ello? That was a niche, but unique art-based sharing service that sold itself off to a venture capital firm, and shortly after went dark without warning. The biggest factor was Ello was never monetized well. At least Flickr has paying users — for now.

@waxy@xoxo.zone Flickr is almost non-existent on search engines now; I sometimes work on historical/archival related projects and my clients are shocked when I find public domain/free use media at quality that doesn't require the usual licensing — and simply doesn't exist elsewhere. And it's not just The Commons, the whole library can be a good research tool/time capsule you won't find anywhere else.

@kottke Since the COVID-19 pandemic I've been rocking custom videoconference background photos from an ancient Corel stock photo CD I stumbled across at an old job. As one might expect there are indeed sea foam green control rooms.

@chockenberry As a motion designer I often have to wrestle with After Effects to eliminate subpixel antialiasing when I want those hard pixels. It's not even about retro resolution — your "interpretation" just looks better even blown up so large. And I'm not terribly surprised — even in the mid-aughts I worked with self-proclaimed UX designers that ignored the pixel grid in drawing tools like Adobe Illustrator.

@cabel When I was a kid that particular Pac-Man cabinet art kept me up at night: "Why does it have legs and eyes when *real* Pac Man doesn't?" "Why are the eyes red?" "Why is it happy? If anything Pac-Man is a commentary on workplace anxiety!"

@cabel@social.panic.com That's good branding; It's a clean design, has multiple meanings that all connect with the plumbing industry, and is memorable.

@adacosta@twit.social @BasicAppleGuy@mastodon.social I completely agree that this is probably a major factor. Or I guess the @Iconfactory@iconfactory.world guys are too expensive. But the thickest irony of analog-to-digital icon themes is that Microsoft Office still hasn't ditched the floppy disc save icon.

@dino@masto.ai @BasicAppleGuy@mastodon.social To be fair, even with current macOS versions one can always paste their own custom icons on apps. This used to be extremely common, but sadly user customization is rarer these days. Even more extreme, with code editor Nova from @panic@social.panic.com one can choose from a bunch of icon options, though this only applies to the Dock.

Replying to @zeldman@front-end.social
@zeldman@front-end.social In-the-past I designed/built 1,200 page ecommerce, company, or marketing campaign sites. I've worked with all kinds of back-ends and systems. It takes me longer to update Squarespace content vs doing it "manually" via HTML and CSS — where I can also design "on-the-fly" as needed. I learned (the hard way) that frameworks et al. are great for big web apps, but are often overkill for anything less. Managing dependencies/deployment can also cripple small projects — and your creativity.
