Looks like federation is finally less than a day behind, now. It's slowly, slowly creeping up on us. Before the weekend is over we might just see some toots come in to LR in real-time!
@trafotin@linuxrocks.online Not even - the algorithm, or any sort of machine learning / ai type stuff these days, is just an obtuse program that tries to maximise a set of numbers. In terms of recommending you tweets, the numbers involved are things like "number of retweets", "number of replies", and so on. So basically the algorithm is just a machine that shows you a thing and goes "is this something that makes you tap the screen for any reason?" and if someone taps on something it goes "OK, I'll add a +1 to my notes", and then shows you more of the stuff that makes other people tap.
And then when you consider that saying stupid shit makes people yell at you, and preaching to the choir doesn't, it's obvious that you've invented a machine that amplifies stupid shit.
So I doubt that Elon has done anything to the algorithm - it was always like this. He's just upped his "stupid shit" factor by an order of magnitude by swinging a figurative baseball bat around in the microservices.
@trafotin@linuxrocks.online This is something I've been trying to tell everyone for over a decade: Aside from an algorithm inserting random garbage in your timeline, your timeline is entirely made up of the people you follow and the things they boost (or retweet, in the case of Twitter).
I.e. if you're seeing tweets from someone and you don't like it, unfollow them. If you're still seeing their tweets, unfollow whoever is retweeting them (or you can also use "turn off retweets" on the offending person, if that is still a feature on Twitter (I haven't been on there for three-four years)).
If from time to time you can go "this person keeps posting stuff that doesn't spark joy in me, I'm going to unfollow them or turn off their retweets", then you will find that your timeline becomes a beautiful, flowering garden of things that make you happy.
Of course, this is all irrelevant when an algorithm is inserting random garbage in your timeline.
@jhamby@chaos.social @glassbottommeg@mastodon.gamedev.place Ahem. As a coffee nerd, I just want to tell you...
You're valid.
@glassbottommeg@mastodon.gamedev.place It's definitely not about reducing waste. Most importantly, French press is a world of difference from filter coffee. The paper takes out a lot of oils that the metal grate in the French press lets through, so both the taste / texture, and the nutritional content is very different.
Coffee makers are fine, it's just that they're not particularly smart - some will just dump a stream of water dead center through the grounds and create a "channel" for the water so it hardly even touches the coffee. Some brew too fast, some brew too slow, etc..
If you think of coffee as chemistry, it's like dumping a whole bunch of different chemicals in a beaker together, and trying to separate them again with only a few variables like time and temperature at your disposal. Coffee nerds are trying to find the optimal way to extract all the tasty chemicals and as little of the un-tasty ones as possible.
@kevmarmol@mastodon.social My only take is that it's disappointing that his best option for those accessibility needs is such a proprietary black box from such an evil company.
Disappointing, but not surprising.
@riahlex@mastodon.sdf.org Ahah! Nice place. I rode along the lake going through there. Beautiful bike paths. Let's go Mets, baby! Love da Mets!
@MistressRemilia@mastodon.sdf.org @hereticgoddess@mastodon.sdf.org Love me a good poultry slam.
@evan@prodromou.pub @lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me "Let me just interject for a moment. What you refer to as 'Mastodon' is in fact Pleroma/Mastodon-FE, or as I've taken to calling it..."
@mia@movsw.0x0.st @evelyn@misskey.bubbletea.dev I'm still a proponent of bringing back ð as well. I þink ðat ðey go well togeðer.
