@stefano@mastodon.bsd.cafe Luckily Open Source server side software seems to be mostly immune to Wirth's Law ("software is getting slower more rapidly than hardware is becoming faster"), in fact thanks to easier to use "bare metal" languages (Go, Zig, Rust...) we have a great pick of super efficient self hosted software. People 15 years ago probably wouldn't have believed how much stuff you can host on a simple Raspberry Pi. On the other hand client side and web application performance nowadays its mostly a joke, having to replace perfectly working phones just to keep using WhatsApp or having Reddit lagging on a MacBook M1 is ridiculous. Open source often isn't much better either since lots of stuff nowadays is still based on Electron and/or bloated React setups.

@CoralineAda@ruby.social Sure, back then we had more leverage but I don't think that unionizing when we had that leverage would have changed the situation when said leverage vanished. Automotive workers in my country were unionized since the aftermath of WW2 (previously the fascist regime outlawed unions) but that wasn't enough to save their jobs when building cars abroad became cheaper. Sure, some software developers were "less smart" (to be kind) than many others and happily built the tools that now are used against many of us but that's just the law of large numbers at work. Among millions you can always find people greedy or stupid enough to build tools that are going to be used to oppress them too.

@CoralineAda@ruby.social It's not that easy, leftists calls to "just unionize bro" are out of touch as neoliberals who suggests to unhoused people to "just get a place to live". Unions may work if workers have some bargaining power but when that work become mostly automatized that bargaining power disappears, an historical example are elevator drivers. The fact that tech workers aren't even essential workers as truck drivers or nurses are further weakens any effort to unionize. Growing up I saw automotive workers in my country doing countless strikes and protests and ending up laid off anyways. I saw my teachers striking too getting very little out of it. So excuse me if I don't want to waste my time with that, to me strike and unions are a toll who became less and less useful in the last 50 years, we can discuss what brought us to this situation but in the meantime we can just play with the cards we get dealt.

@nyx@lgbtqia.space @maxleibman@beige.party I wouldn't take for granted that UBI would result in an improvement of our condition: the UBI may be meager enough that all you'll be able to afford is to live in a pod and to eat rice and beans at every meal or the UBI can be used as another tool to keep citizens in line so if you dissent with your government or with the billionaires who "generously" fund your UBI you have no choice but starve.

When at the beginning of the decade the US religious right pushed for this some outrage ensued but now that we have "progressive" politicians pushing for it (and apparently Mark Zuckerberg too) the mainstream stopped caring.

One of the most successful things Mark Zuckerberg ever did was "infiltrating" the mainstream Internet posing as a nerd and then contributing to turn what used to be a place for community and self expression into a big frat house for preppies.

@futurebird Since I was very young I used to love math and computers and showed a precocious attitude to both. Sadly in upper grades my interest in math was soured by grades, European system is much less competitive than US system but a bad grade still brought lots of drama at home and this made me develop anxiety towards math. Equations triggered a flight or fight response in me that ironically suppressed my ability for the higher level thinking essential for learning math. This vicious cycle continued for the whole high school and only now I’m recovering a true passion for math. On the other hand I was always able to study and practice programming in a very low pressure environment. For most it was just me and the computer and mistakes just meant I had to find another way to write my code, they didn’t caused family drama. This drew me to programming more and more until I was able to make a job out of it.

@datenwolf @cwebber I considered learning Rust because I was looking for a modern systems language with modern tooling and without GC but the complicated syntax, the complex toolchain and a lack of a standard is pushing me towards Zig, this is another strong push in that direction.

@q@glauca.space This is great! Imagine all the independent route planning apps which could benefits from this. One of the main reasons why I struggle to leave Google Maps behind is their accuracy in route planning involving public transit, maybe one day they'll lose this advantage.

@jamesb192 @tofu @sawaba @pluralistic @iFixit Wayland and X11 have very different philosophies, the fact that in Wayland you basically have to build your own compositor brings challenges unique to it and makes smaller window manager harder to implement reinforcing GNOME/KDE duopoly

@tofu I used laptop with slotted RAM since late 2000s and never had graphical issues. You may need cutting edge performance and I respect that sis but why should we take away the choice in favor of something considered "superior" by enthusiasts?

@jamesb192 @tofu @sawaba @pluralistic @iFixit Bluetooth has many annoyances (manly another battery to manage when I already have multiple battery powered devices to charge) so I'd rather keep the jack as a choice... not sure if a serious X12 exists but if they actually develop something that keeps X11 strengths while mitigating its drawbacks I'll be happy to use it compared to the radical change which is Wayland.

Not everyone needs ultra low latency, one of my workstations still uses DDR3 and for my tasks (programming, Internet surfing, music/photo management and general productivity) works very well.

• backing up your photo on your desktop/laptop using the gold old cable and an app supporting PTP protocol (Windows and Mac have at least one preinstalled while on BSD and Linux you have many options to download from package repositories), no iCloud or Google Photos needed
• choosing DRM free ebooks, music and games and keeping a backup of them
• using Syncthing to sync your data across devices

With a very bloated web standards (data from some years ago showed that at time the web standpoint grew by as much pages as the whole POSIX standard every 6 months, not sure how its now) it's very hard for a new codebase to catch up. I wonder how big was Google's role into this bloating and weather they did it on purpose. In my opinion web should have stayed like in early/mid 2000: a document viewer with some client side scripting thrown in.
