@coolbutuseless This is a brilliant idea and I hope it is proposed to R core.

To add to the idea, it would be very helpful if we made each additional bracket access a simpler form of the data in question, until we end up with a raw vector. E.g.

x[[[, 1]]] factor vector
x [[[[, 1]]]] numeric vector
x[[[[[, 1]]]]] raw vector

This way, we can have very nice to read code like

x <- mtcars[["cyl"]][[[[[, 1]]]]]
