Google isn’t getting special treatment here because it’s Google: Waymo isn’t importing finished consumer cars, it’s importing a vehicle platform, removing the original electronics, and integrating its own autonomous system. That’s much closer to sourcing components than selling Chinese EVs directly to the public, so it’s not really an apples to apples comparison.

Unpopular opinion: Google’s approach actually makes sense here. The value isn’t the rolling metal box, it’s the autonomous driving stack. If Zeekr can build a high quality EV platform more cheaply, why reinvent it? Buy the best chassis, replace the electronics you don’t trust, and focus engineering effort where your competitive advantage actually is.

The interesting part is not whether Apple wins the biggest model race, but whether it changes the economics: If enough AI runs locally, every token avoided is cloud capacity nobody has to build. That is a very different business model from selling ever more cloud compute.

Meta can absolutely pivot to renting compute for whatever model wins, but calling that an automatic death spiral feels premature: Companies with billions of users can survive technical setbacks for years. Betting against distribution has humbled plenty of investors before. What strikes me as particularly risky at Meta is the sheer amount of power Zuckerberg wields: ultimately, it’s the same problem as with Musk, even though Zuck has behaved much more moderately so far.

Interesting that Microsoft is effectively running a portfolio strategy instead of betting on a single lab. Anthropic is already paying off on paper while OpenAI looks much more volatile. That alone suggests the AI race is far less settled than the headlines usually imply, even for the company funding both sides. And now the Chinese Open Weight AI models are coming onto the scene too, offering almost the same quality.

Pragmatic, but revealing. If Meta truly believed Llama would stay ahead, it would not be preparing for a future where competitors power its products. It also makes business sense for Meta because it already rents out compute capacity instead of using it for its own models: supporting multiple leading models could attract more customers to its infrastructure.

It’s not about who deserves to win, it’s about incentives. If one side unilaterally slows development while others don’t, the likely outcome is a shift in technological leadership, not a slower pace overall. Whether that’s the US, China, or anyone else is a separate political question from whether voluntary restraint is an effective strategy.

Unfortunately, based on many years of experience, I have to agree. However, I also see a light at the end of the tunnel, particularly in Europe, where there is a growing desire to break free from the US SaaS stranglehold, using open source software. Regarding OWAI I see a fundamental difference: Slack isn’t just software, it’s a hosted service with identity, storage and network effects. An open weight model is more like a compiler: once downloaded, nobody can revoke it. You may still pay for inference, but pricing power drops when anyone can host the same model.

Funny how »open is dangerous« only became the dominant narrative once Chinese models caught up: If your competitive moat depends on governments blocking free alternatives instead of building better products, maybe your moat isn’t technology at all.

Exactly. It’s much easier to regulate an API than software people can download and run on their own hardware. Once capable open weight AI models exist, they spread much like Linux or other open source software: mirrors appear, forks emerge, and improvements compound. Governments can make access less convenient, but preventing global distribution altogether is a far harder problem than restricting a hosted service.

The awkward part is that software has a habit of racing toward free once it becomes good enough. If an open weight model delivers 95 percent of the value without recurring API costs, plenty of companies will choose that and spend the savings on integration instead. History keeps rhyming, even if investors hate the tune.

That assumes demand is fixed. Historically, the biggest technology shifts created entirely new markets that barely existed beforehand. Almost nobody predicted today’s cloud or app economy from early internet revenue. AI spending could still prove excessive, but current demand is a poor ceiling for what future demand might become.

That’s either incredibly idealistic or a very smart strategy: Open models grow ecosystems faster than walled gardens, but compute still decides who gets to play at the highest level. If AGI really becomes shared infrastructure, the moat shifts from models to chips, data and execution.

Probably. Regulators usually care about reach, not architecture. If the Fediverse became genuinely mainstream, it would likely end up in the same political spotlight. The real difference is that federation makes compliance an instance by instance problem, not one global switch. That is much harder to enforce.

Both Washington and Beijing now treat AI less like software and more like oil or nuclear technology. Once that happens, export controls are almost inevitable. The real question is whether open weight AI make those controls increasingly irrelevant over time.

I think the bubble will not burst but deflate long before the tech disappears: Plenty of companies will burn cash and investors will get wrecked, but the genuinely useful products will stick around. Guardrails will improve too, because trust eventually becomes a competitive advantage.

You’re underselling what companies can do. An LLM can’t verify reality the way people imagine, but it can detect patterns that correlate with crisis well enough to escalate, refuse harmful advice, or encourage real help. Seatbelts don’t prevent every crash either: they still reduce harm.

Personal responsibility does not disappear, but neither does product responsibility. If a company builds a system meant to converse with millions, it should not predictably reinforce obvious crises. We expect guardrails in cars without abolishing driver responsibility. The same principle can apply here.
