@morrick@appdot.net I've made a few projects for myself, and my friends really like them. I can't make them a product: there are so many things to fix and make better. And then I look at what people routinely release and despair.

@delric@mastodon.social @daringfireball@mastodon.social Because, as history teaches us, after a corrupt government there's always a non-corrupt honest one. No one ever goes "oh, these were doing everything with impunity, we'd better not repeat that". (Granted, there are sometimes slight improvements before plunging further) Or do you mean "no" as in "there will not be a next administration"? :)

And in the next administration, there’s no reason to think it won’t be prosecuted as such.

Lol. The next administration will do everything Trump is doing, and will perhaps dial it to 11.

But the spirit of his advice is that you should avail yourself of bookmarklets and browser extensions that fight back against shitty ads and dickovers.

Oh no, really? I thought it was "lucrative ads business" that Meta was entitled to when EU was combating this and "clueless EU bureacrats with their GDPR" when it was EU trying to curb the ad/surveillance corporations.

But sure, "you should avail yourself" or something.

@Starfia@mastodon.social In 00s when Microsoft was the most hated company in the world, they never even thought of imposing limits on what users could or could not run on their devices. And would often go out of its way to ensure that users could. Now supranational corpos impose arbitrary limits on what you can run on your devices, and somehow people cheer them on, and anyone who says that users must have choice is for some reason hated and called delusional.

@daringfireball@mastodon.social "User" and "choice" never cross @gruber@mastodon.social's mind. Unless it's 20 000+ words on how developers should have the freedom to use different shapes for icons on MacOS. He writes "Google designed Android for its own services" (true) and doesn't even for millisecond consider why it could be a bad thing and why government action is required. In his mind supranational corporations are always in the right and who can even dare question their actions? Except icons. Icons are important.

@daringfireball@mastodon.social Do many words to again say "I believe only supranational corporations are allowed to tell users what they can and cannot do with the devices they users own. Oh wait. Not own: lease, and use only within the arbitrary limits these corporations let them out of the goodness of their corporate hearts. Anyone saying that users should have choice on the devices is own is delusional because supranational corporations say so. Also: expect more essays on icon choice"

There are 15 000 managers and 25 000 designers at Apple who looked at the Playground app icon (and product) and said: yup, this is an app and icon worthy of Apple brand. (Well, it is, isn't it, these days)

This decision should still serve as good precedent for location data held by other companies, and I hope the decision serves as good precedent for any searchable Personally Identifiable Information susceptible to fishing-expedition warrants in general.

You don't say.

When is your next essay on how GDPR is bad, and how Meta will suffer without its lucrative ads business due?

A completely ad hoc policy of “Whatever the White House says, goes” is the makings of a terrible regulatory framework for AI.

But when Apple denies its users access to any other models/agents/assitants, its totally fine.

Someone needs to re-index Internet Archive up to year 2022/2023, and provide results as a search engine. And freeze it there.

With Google turning its already useless search into AI slop machine, that would be the only useful search engine around.
