@lina Of course, POST 2022 there's been a strong incentive to "lie, cheat, and steal." Which seems to mean scraping everything everywhere, obfuscating where you got your data from as much as possible (or better yet evading the question), and subtly implying public is the same as public domain. And hoping you become "too big to fail" by the time this catches up with you and translates into favorable rulings on fair use and "transformativeness."

@lina For text you might try RedPajama who I remember were attempting to build datasets/models to rival facebook's llama when it first burst onto the scene by being leaked, and purportedly wanted it to be "open"....though I can't vouch for how legal it actually is/was or where they're at by now.

@lina I think I looked into a few datasets once (COCO?) and there was stuff about it in theory being pulled from appropriately CC0-ish stuff on flickr, but I don't think there was the kind of machine-readable accompanying database of every image, a link to the resource, it's licencing terms, etc etc that you'd want in order to mechanically track, audit, and verify this. I'm not sure there were even flickr reference numbers anywhere.

@lina Before the LLM Madness took hold in 2022, at least in the imaging sphere it was always a little questionable where datasets came from and nobody looked to hard because it was only ever (publically) used for training/benchmarking your thing and publishing a paper on it. (though there was at least one dataset which merely _linked_ to images elsewhere to avoid redistributing them >_>)

Those libraries are where most of the value is. (It merely happens to be a requirement to be compatible with arduino's garbage build system to use them)

@bonkers@nerdculture.de @henk@waag.social Compatibility with the huge number of existing arduino libraries for various chips and peripherals is also a pretty important asset. I've been looking for a rust library for the MAX3421E and the rust support is basically nonexistant. Arduino libraries meanwhile support nearly a dozen USB device classes including android debug bridge.

@bonkers@nerdculture.de @henk@waag.social Rust is definitely not beginner friendly. Arduino only got away with C++ because they used the smallest possible subset of the language, to the point where it might have well been a custom-written DSL.

@bonkers@nerdculture.de @henk@waag.social If only arduino's "build system" weren't a lovecraftian nightmare of header files, java tooling, custom compiler patches, and god knows what else. Practically every "alternative" involves having a copy of the arduino IDE on disk somewhere. I don't know if anyone over the last couple decades has had the wherewithal to try to re-implement the accursed thing.

@bonkers@nerdculture.de @henk@waag.social I'm less concerned about the hardware and more about the IDE which Arduino provide as well as it's cloud-connected package manager for software libraries. Boards have been cloned forever but the IDE has remained a constant.
