@servus@social.servus.at Finally, the last day of AMRO, I listened to a really great talk about digital sovereignty in Germany from Anna Kraher (who is not on mastodon yet, but hopefully this will change soon!), she talked about the growing interest in intelligence from tech companies in an age where this “intelligence” can be mined by big tech to train their AI models. This was followed by a super interesting talk about data centers and agriculture from Manu Zechner. 6/7

@servus@social.servus.at The next day, I was very moved by the documentary from and about Stadtwerkstatt - which has been around in Linz since the late 70s and has contributed immensely not only to the local music scene, but also to the development of digital culture and of course the promotion of feminism, which was a major topic of the film which was told exclusively by the women involved in Stadtwerkstatt. If you ever get a chance to see this film - I 100% recommend it, it will travel to some festivals soon, so be on the lookout! 5/7

@servus@social.servus.at I’m the afternoon @marieverdeil@post.lurk.org and i ran an updated version of our workshop What’s a Watt, where we invited the participants to engage in various forms of data visualization of our energy consumption and were very happy to have @livliilvil@waag.social in the workshop to measure the energy consumption of the newest google data center compared to the consumption of a Tesla 🔋🚗 And in the evening we went to the exhibition opening at BB15 which featured 2 wonderful works, one of which from @jwn@tldr.nettime.org 4/7

@servus@social.servus.at Then @l03s@post.lurk.org talked about the big sales pitches behind data centers in the NL, such as using excess heat of data centers to grow peppers, with catchy lines such as “when you think you're working on your computer, you're actually growing peppers 🌶 “ HA! @livliilvil@waag.social then talked about how these data centers are popping up like mushrooms and gave us case studies of 5 different data centers. (He also showed zuckerberg who is showing off building a data center the size of manhattan 🙄) 3/7

@servus@social.servus.at The festival started with the opening of the exhibition From the Ashes of the Burnout Machine, where @marieverdeil@post.lurk.org and I got to exhibit our Energy Academy! And on the first conference day we started with a round of presentations on data centers - notably from @christinagruber@mastodon.social who spoke about the first large scale data center which is being built in Austria in Kronstorf (which some people got to visit on the last day of the festival!!) 2/7

Two weeks ago now, I took a trip to Linz (the city I joke to be my second home at this point) to take part in my favorite art+tech festival - Art Meets Radical Openness from @servus@social.servus.at. It’s hard to summarize in a few posts how nice the festival and its community is, you’ll just have to go one day and try to experience it yourself. However what I can attempt to do is highlight some parts of the program I really enjoyed, more on this below!
