In the 1958 novel "The Ugly American," the titular character is the good guy, who's not afraid to get his hands dirty, love amongst the locals, speak their language, etc., in contrast to the out-of-touch Americans who refused to learn anything about where they were stationed.

LBJ flipped it in a 1964 speech, using "ugly American" to refer to Americans behaving badly abroad. Now everyone uses it wrong because that Texas schmuck didn't read the damn book!
