art isn’t something you can generate as such. having a model that can copy the Mona Lisa pixel perfectly hasn’t stolen the Mona Lisa. it’s the shitty kids’ movies and TV ads and company logos that are at stake. art is about effort and ingenuity and is centered around people and places and times and can’t be simply replicated by an industrial process, as much as Disney wants that

it’s one of those cases where if you have to ask, you should probably just use systemd. anything else is outdated or a passion project based on some idealism, which i’m all for, but if you’re worried about gaming performance as a primary concern i’d put it out of your mind. for example, i’m an obsessive tinkerer that uses NixOS and Arch before that and i use nushell and Neovim and Hyprland, but i use systemd cuz i don’t see a reason not to. it’s well supported and stable.

The answer to the PII issues is hence not restrictions in userdb, the answer is proper app sandboxing. And that even already exists in flatpak! It restricts access to $HOME already, and to userdb too! And that’s the way to do it! Hence, just embrace app sandboxing! And if you come to me and say “hey, I run all my apps without sandboxing, but i want the birthday hidden anyway” then I can only say, your model is really really broken. Fix your security model first, then come back.

lots of good reasons to spin up containers for development is my point, especially for an embedded system with exotic system dependencies (compared to Node.js, for example). Home Assistant is a “simple app” that i have to open ports for. does that mean they have a good reason? maybe not.

really? i mean, people have done it for friggin vanilla ass Node.js servers. Android projects can have weird dependencies that a container might help solve (NDK etc). i’m not saying that it’s my preferred way to build, but that wasn’t the question.

sure, there’s reason to be cynical, but i don’t think handing society to fascists out of bleak pessimism is the way i want to live my life.

i guess in these situations i think of my aunt, who is in her 80s. she has an iPhone. should she buy a NAS and host Immich? i don’t think “make backups” is the simple advice it appears to be for the vast majority of people

i think it’s easy to make comments like this from the peanut gallery, with the benefit of hindsight and a self-selected group of users who will agree. but Apple should be legally obligated to address this. the solution can’t be “this idiot didn’t spend his nights and weekends doing 3-tier backups and high availability infrastructure diversity!”; that’s not scalable. if we just accept that companies can do this, they will continue to. but this has been on the front page of HackerNews. it’ll probably make it to Tim Apple’s desk eventually, so we’ll see what shakes out.

as someone who used to work on “expert models” i’m excited that not everyone has abandoned them for “what if we just had a model that knows everything (that doesn’t exist) and costs a billion dollars to run”
