NEW: The privacy regulator raised concerns Australia teen social media tech trial "overstated" how well these technologies protected people's privacy — especially since it didn't technically test the products' privacy protections or assess them against Australian privacy law.

i'm not as good as some at spotting AI writing, but it's funny how often I find myself immediately automatically skimming/skipping ahead of writing that i later find out is (suspected) AI slop. it just has a distinctive lack of grip that makes it slide across your eyeballs without being ingested.

Exclusive: The Albanese government offered to pay pro-teen social media ban group 36 Months to promote policy.

Weeks before the ban began, 36 Months answered a selective departmental invitation to pitch "communications services" to promote the ban, but was unsuccessful.

Communications Department offered to pay 36 Months lobby group to promote teen social media ban

The pro-ban group answered the government's call — an unusual one to be extended to an advocacy group — and submitted an ultimately too-expensive bid to do ‘communications services’ for the policy.

Scoop: Three months into Australia's ban, new data given to Crikey suggests that most teens who were on social media pre-ban are still on those platforms.

While it's just one data point, it adds to early evidence suggesting that there's widespread flouting of the ban.

well wrap me in a flag and smear some vegemite on my face, i'm feeling bloody patriotic seeing global investors pouring money into Australian bonds because our economy is less vulnerable to AI disruption because we're dummies who can only dig things out of the ground and sign up for mortages

NEW: A Queensland software engineer has been in a four-and-a-half year long battle with Services Australia to get a look at a MyGov app's source code.

He says we should be able to scrutinise it to make sure it's secure. Services Australia says it's a national security risk.

i see a lot of people, frustrated with tech, wanting to "go analog" or give up on tech. i totally get it! a lot of tech we use right now sucks. but my 2026 wish/resolution is to put more energy towards figuring out how we can wrest control of tech from a powerful few and find ways to use it for good

interesting choice to project "LET THEM BE KIDS" onto the Sydney Harbour Bridge as part of the celebrations of the teen social media ban

It's not a line that came from Albanese or the government — it's the name of News Corp's campaign for the ban.

We're now finding out that as many as 70,000 people had their government IDs provided to prove their ages leaked by Discord. Like I wrote last week, this is an inherent risk (and made greater by a rushed process) of getting platforms to do age checks
