Yes it's odd to see an article about electricity generation technology that doesn't even have a speculative 'levelised cost of energy' as they call it. That is lifecycle expected average $/MWh. I guess its a very early prototype. and maybe China doesn't care to much about LCOE.

yes as others have said. microcontroller with decent io and wifi, fairly easy to make web interfaces which is handy. A step up from arduino and i dont think it eats too much more power if the wifi is used sparingly. I've got a wildlife infrared camera made off a pi zero. I reckon if i can switch that to esp32 the battery life might stretch quite a bit - or i can shrink the case to a smaller battery. raspberry pipico would probably do similar tbf, but i bought like 10 esp32 for cheap. but i'm not quite sure how well they handle the image processing triggering. Recently i've been making these: https://github.com/gadec-uk/departures-board as gifts for people who i know that live in London who i sometimes stay with. extremely useful. There's loads of projects like this that people have done and you can just put them together for a few tens of quid and a few hours of time if you dont have to write the software.

I think esp32 is more commonly used. i think they're pretty similar capabilities and both dirt cheap. I just see more projects with esp32.

16gb raspberry pi was always weird, even 8gb. It's more just a desktop pc or something at that level - the used pc market has usually been similar vfm when you factor in storage and peripherals. The pizero2(W) is still very cheap for real raspberry pi stuff - where you just want an OS for some reason instead of esp32.

Unfortunately it needs a safety cage around the bottom end. That'd probably spoiling the visuals - though clear acrylic might work. The tuning was the the other huge issue, he didn't actually say how long it took to get in tune tune, nor how long it held tune. cool though

Is it even true? I'd have thought if i find the right wine prefix, use some winetricks type thing on it, execute whatever installer, then it should modify that game files / env? I'm not saying i've ever done it, but it feels like that would most likely work just fine. I mean as a uk steaming turd, i'd take the cash ( so long as it didn't require age verification), but there are way more egregious infringements of competition in this cuntry that get off scott free even after CMA "investigations".

It's worse than that, lots of these linuxes actually have this builtin virus called wine, which means they are really just windows in disguise. It also makes them look like a hacker to the FBI, that's why TYOTLD has never come. Most linusers are getting dissapeared to guano bay. Far safer to stay on windows, linus is only suitable for real hackers who can grep their way into cia mainframe to expunge their records.

DOS and win2000 (debloated) was the only ones i could stand. XP debloated was almost tolerable, but 2000 was nicer for reasons that i cant remember. I'm not sure about calling windows the OS before me/xp though (whenever they put the NT kernel into consumer) - i think before that it was still effectively just MS-DOS as the operating system. Windows was more like a desktop environment in linux terms. For example i think I used the same windows 3.1 or 3.11 across several operating systems, dos 5.0, 6.0, 6.2, 6.22. Windows 3 never really seemed to do any basic OS stuff , like configuring memory or disk drives or setting up IRQs for like soundcards and stuff. Win95/98 never actually bothered me; it was easy to opt out of the gui (which i didn't like at all).

Thanks! You stopped me clinking the linked slop so i downvoted OP, but your comment made me look up the previous project and some of that made me feel slightly less bad about my own shitty ignorant failures with guitar effect circuits. https://github.com/torvalds/GuitarPedal If you actually know what you are doing, and you looked at the schematic and went "Linus is clearly way over his head, and that is just stupid", whether it comes to parts choices or to just the circuit in general, please let me know. In particular, don't feel like it would be impolite to tell me I'm incompetent and doing stupid things. I absolutely know I'm not competent and would love to hear any criticism. Some of the best teaching moments have been when I haven't understood something, and somebody piped up to tell me I should do Xyz. I'm going to leave the link to the "Tremolo doubling as a metronome" issue from the 1590A pedal project, because that was a case of somebody (@gralco) coming in and very politely telling me I was doing stupid things. Pushing me to do simulations in KiCad completely changed the game. So don't be shy to tell me my circuits suck. Because that's literally why I do this!

Long before the term intelligence was sullied by the prefix "artificial" the phrase "police intelligence" has long been a euphemism for a suspicion that they cannot back up with any evidence that would stand up in court. I think coprolite seems like a perfect fit for their methods. They just need to train it to start off with solid evidence and fuck it up until it doesn't stand up in court. Then it'll be employee of the week. A bit like computer driven cars, it might be shite but that doesn't mean it is necessarily worse than the typical human cop. The real problem is if it's harder to hold it to account.

I don't know about supplies in rest of the world, but typically the rpi "kits" that include the book seem to be very limited and rarely in stock. I think the book, at least older versions, can be found on ebay though. I think its just a basic into to python and GPIO so the earlier editions are probably fine.

Compare it to the likely alternative for the task/person, probably R or even MS excel in many cases i'd guess. The alternatives should ideally be based on empirical observation of the population. The marginal saving of choosing a higher efficiency than python might look a lot lower.

I guess you might want to link the psu to a bunch of relays that controlled by the gpio, and use it to deliver medium amounts of power to various peripherals. i guess lots of motors or maybe fairly powerful led lighting arrays, or weak heaters , comes to mind. So what seemed most daft to me is exposing the 3v and 5v lines on that breadboard like thing, but not using the psu's +/-12v lines - that could let you run 12 and 24V stuff. plenty of space to allow for a bunch of relays and some connectors. But even so its a strange form factor for that.

UK is generally shite - and probably getting worse. intercity trains and local bus services are probably better than average USA - if there even is such an "average" for USA. I don't think much in the UK is as good as say NYC though - and if there is - say maybe central London, it's fucking expensive. I recall from years ago buses and metro in NYC being quite cheap - but not like continental Europe levels of cheap. Good job UK is not in Europe anymore - bringing the equally meaningless EU average down.

It'll depend on the futures contracts. They'll have price clauses and, get-out clauses , resale clauses and stuff, so it'll come down to lawyering. It's unlikely that journos know the contract details. Buy clearly any OEM without a futures contract already in place does not have access to low prices. And any OEM with cheap stock and contractual freedom to resell would seriously consider parting out and selling off stock at the windfall price.

I read the shitposts - pretty much my whole feed except from sciencememes, and never see too much politics, the odd one here or there but nothing annoying. Maybe I have enough user level blocks in place already. I do see far too much of this of this corn crap recently, so I'm just building up a whole new section of my blocklist. If there isn't any diversity in shit posts soon, i guess i just ditch this community as it'll be more efficient. I guess i should expect a dirty protest from shitpost - but I'd rather the literal shit posts than one more day of this cornucrapia. Does ratemypoo.com still exist - maybe I'll just browse that.

Competition, especially free market competition is one of the enemies of capitalism. Fortunately for capitalists in a liberalised (unregulated) market it's not too hard to build up market power somewhere in the supply chain, and squeeze out, or effectively force the competition into franchise. Almost unavoidable economies of scale in industries like banking are huge problem, that concentrates critical market power and drives out competition under the guise of plausible investor friendly sounding shit like "risk premia", "international competitiveness", "labour cost efficiency". Directed credit, sectoral and regional should be part of being a bank, the banks have been given responsibility for running the economy, but not made accountable for it. That's why they can get away with investing in real estate bubbles instead of productive industry. FDR was one of the last USA leaders who seemed to understand the role of banks - sadly that was a long time ago and those ideas seem to be long forgotten.
