@Simon318ppm@mastodon.sdf.org I spent a couple of years as a student in Sunderland and there it is stotty or stotties that ruled the bun roost. However a stotty is a behemoth among buns. They are a light soft bread but are usually around dinner plate size, 12" / 300mm diameter. A full chip stotty was quite the dining undertaking. Another option was the "savoury stotty" filled with a kind of mix of coleslaw and grated cheese. Finally the traditional favourite Pease Pudding as in the rhyme.

@Nickiquote@mstdn.social Chip butties are usually bought in Fish and Chips shops or "greasy spoon" cafés the latter offering embellishments like tomato sauce, brown sauce, perhaps English mustard or a fried egg. There is also the chip pitta, chips in a pitta bread often available from your local kebab shop.

@Nickiquote@mstdn.social Non-UK folks may see references to names for bread that may need explaining. There are many local / regional names for a bead roll and many styles too, these can include, but are not limited to: rolls, buns, baps, barms, barm cakes, cobs, batch and stotties. Any can be used for a chip butty. Anything from two slices of mass produced white sliced loaf, fancy artisan sourdough, soft flour dusted bap or crusty bread roll. Chips, between two bits of buttered bread equals a chip butty.
