I like to think that my 45 years of reporting on technology and business has left me sceptical rather than cynical but the behaviour of some tech companies is such that sometimes readers might be better served by the latter approach.

I can think of ways the term "butter chicken tsunami" is not racist.

When I was a kid growing up in England seriously rich people had to pay a Super Tax of 95%. The Beatles even wrote a song moaning about it.

The idea seems almost unthinkable today, but that was the "swinging sixties", a time of great optimism.

Found my Filofax in a drawer while looking for something else. Realised this was probably a more efficient way of staying organised than a digital alternative.

It never spammed me or nagged me to buy overpriced services I'm not remotely interested in.

Am seriously considering reviving it.

@lightweight @xurizaemon @stephen I use hide-my-email for almost every online transaction or when signing up for things. I almost walked out of Noel Leeming because the sales clerk would not complete a sale until I handed over my phone number and email - in the end I just gave fake ones, but there have been occasions when (usually because I'm not properly paying attention) I have handed over the real ones.

@xurizaemon @stephen This is true, but some recent spam is highly targeted. Most of it is scattergun... I suspect someone I do business with in Auckland has either sold their customer database to ratbags or it's been stolen.

@stephen Yes, I got that one too. Some of them are so surprisingly well targeted that I guess one or more customer database with my details has been compromised, for example the senders know my suburb and that I have recently reached retirement age... that's quite specific.

@tsturm I should have been clearer... some of the biggest events may have had TV news cameras, but for 15 - 30 second clips. There was no video coverage in the modern sense.

@tsturm Ha... videos were most certainly NOT a thing at that time. I don't think they became common for launches until at least the late 1990s. It was very low key by modern standards and very, very English more like a morning tea and I think there were probably no more than 20 people in the room, 30 maximum. I don't remember the ZX81 event anything like as well as the Sinclair Spectrum launch, which was much bigger and more lavish, but still restrained by modern standards.
