@revk @tindie haha yeah knowing the team that was running this at Supplyframe (the parent company) this is undoubtedly a fuck up. More likely someone failed a deploy due to some system never having been updated, and now nobody knows how to restore.

Watching teams start migrations towards React "because our team knows it, and we want to have LLMs generate it" is so depressing.

Sure, shoot yourselves in both feet while you're at it.

Recruiter messaging me about a job opportunity.

What's this? An interesting job building web apps for high performance monitoring of generalized novel hardware systems... Right up my street. Hardware, check, web, check, visualizations, yup, performance, yes please!

Oh... "3+ years experience with React and CSS-in-JS". Ah.

You didn't actually mean you were serious about performance did you?

I do not, nor would I ever, recommend you try and build high performance web apps with React. Bye!

I just discovered I live in a city where on Easter Sunday we have a competition to find the most hunky Jesus and then we can watch our neighbors hurl themselves down a steep hill on big wheel bikes dressed in the most outrageous costumes.

SF continues to amaze and delight.

The AI industry has reached its logical conclusion. Vulnerabilities as a Service. VaaS is the hot new thing folks:

Merging the PR that deletes 330k lines of old prototype code on a Friday afternoon then walking out to the pub for a pint on a sunny day... Doesn't get much better.

Must be nice.

Executives: "You can all go 10x faster now, you're empowered!"
Managers: "Yes let's go team!"
Managers schedule 10x as many meetings to go faster

Execs: "Look, even designers are shipping code now! So much empowerment!"

Engineering: "Fuckit, APPROVE, I don't have time to review anymore. Have to get to the next meeting about the designer vibe coded feature we're shipping tomorrow."

Execs: "Quality matters.".

Engineering: FML.

@slightlyoff yeah the failure to ship Decorators after such a long haul and so much usage in the wild is a complete disaster and I will continue to raise a stink about it. We absolutely need this to land in native it's causing an unreasonable overhead in shipped code for something that is this far along in the standards process.

@slightlyoff it does. I honestly want this or something like it as a platform primitive. There were some efforts along those lines going on a while back but I lost track of them.

Just saw this from a friend and now I can't unsee it: "I just had a weird thought. (LLM type) AI is a lot like torture, in that you'll get an answer that sounds plausible, but might not be true because the victim/AI will give whatever answer it thinks you want. From now on I'm going to think of asking AI stuff like you're waterboarding a nerdy seven year old." Stop the AI waterboarding!

@cstross@wandering.shop yeah exactly. My grandmother has a 2011 iMac. It hasn't been updated since she bought it. By my M4 ruined eyes it's the most frustrating experience in the world. The only thing she was annoyed about was all the Adobe Flash popups that suddenly started appearing on her online Bridge website when we finally shut down that plugin ecosystem!

@cstross my guess is the next era of wasteful computing is the local AI models. That'll drive another whole cycle of devices needing replacement for 128gb of integrated memory and NPUs for 'features' nobody actually uses or likes. Maybe it's time I get out of this industry already! Hah.

@cstross@wandering.shop yup. UX development has a lot to answer for in terms of compute excess. The web 2.0 era similarly ate up a lot of performance. The very idea that 32gb of ram might not be enough for a user like this even in 5years time is ridiculous to me.

@slightlyoff@toot.cafe @polotek@social.polotek.net @agocke@hachyderm.io I think it can bring benefits even in small teams, but you're right it takes a high level of proficiency to get the gains at that scale. I am thankful to be working with a team with as small a stack as we can muster (similarly TS+Lit) and am looking forward to keeping it that way. Frameworkless web dev is a thing, and it's amazing the complexity of apps you can build and the speed at which you can build them when you work close to the platform with a skilled team.

@seldo@alpaca.gold @brianleroux@indieweb.social I think that's fair and have seen it in play in orgs I work with. "This is what we know and can move fastest with" is always the baseline reasoning. That doesn't mean that its the right choice in the long run. The oil comparison is apt, we all know it's bad, we all know there are better alternatives and yet many of us continue to abuse our environment for what people keep selling us is easy and fast. Doesn't make it right, we just need to keep arguing to open people's eyes!
