re: ethics with AI. There's only so much we can do when there's no accountability for ethics in tech.
However, the best that we can do is continue to support free and open source models so there is an alternative out there that belongs to the public, not a corporation.
I spoke to devs at a very AI-centric event recently and they all agreed on this:
Writing your own code, running into challenges that stump you, then learning from that is how we as developers learn why certain optimizations exist and when to use them.
Most people are going to be using AI at work. AI doesn't replace learning, but it can massively speed up your development time. Minimize use on learning projects, maximize use in cases that require speed. Give it guardrails.
in 1983, Richard Stallman started the free software movement. This is how we gained free access to core tools that we use every day including compilers, shells, debuggers, text editors, etc. Many of those tools were previously proprietary and closed source.
Somehow we're regressing back to paid access for tools we rely on. People are being priced out of ownership and required to pay high subscription fees. Is this the future?
