@LionsPhil@plush.city @nicuveo@tech.lgbt No, I think there are outcomes where less overall harm has occurred, and I think that will be non-zero pretty much no matter what we do now; and I don't know if blanket refusal is how we get to these least-harm outcomes. Not unless there's a large number joining in, and as implied elsewhere in the thread, I don't see that happening now. Not anymore. It's all so fucked. Pay your union dues, that's probably going to be what makes a difference. What I don't know is if it's worth keeping a job that increasingly involves codegen models as the way to fund those dues. If you do know a path to zero harm that isn't paved with wishes and thin air, then please by all means let me know, because I sure as hell am not seeing it. :/

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt Glad to hear, then -- at first it sounded like the implication was that someone with a different read of the path from yours must necessarily have "brainworms". Which... Yeah, not cool. :/ The Claude thing, I can perhaps shed some light on. As of only weeks ago, the models passed a threshold where I think they are now viable for their stated purpose. My assessment before that was that they would always just decohere too fast for actual serious code generation to stringent standards. And fuck it, but I now think I was wrong. :/ That's seismic, and changes two big things, IMO. One, people who were in opposition on purely technical grounds, are gonna change sides, yeah. And two, the battle lines have shifted majorly and pretty much overnight. I think we lost the fight for whether codegen will become a standard feature of SWE positions, and we lost it decisively. Abstaining will be hard like abstaining from capitalism is hard and for the same reasons. So yeah, people will move on to the next battle.

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt Just sitting on the side being upset that the world isn't like what we want is valid for self-preservation, but it doesn't help. Shouting at people on our side because their read on the path of least aggregate harm differs from yours or mine helps even less. The anger's good, though. I hope we don't let go of the anger.

@nicuveo@tech.lgbt I mean, the path of least aggregate harm just doesn't come with signposts and everyone is just trying to figure things out, and we're all here groping around in the fog on ground that keeps shifting on a weekly basis. So do you deadass abandon the normies around you to the grift? Or do you try to reign them in as you can? The latter means you need some understanding of what they're on about, else they'll just disregard you as clueless the moment you say something completely at odds with their experience. Do you outright surrender the battlefield to a few US megacorps? Or do you try to understand how to make alternatives viable, and at what externality cost? Is the right path political, economical, technical? (...)
