An aside, can't help it today, the only community I've seen grapple with Langdon Winner's "Do Artifacts Have Politics" is a left crypto discord. It was extremely strange to see a community full of e/acc engage with it. It's foundational, and depressing, to understand we subject our users to decisions. We more moor and then maroon in systems they can't change and then act like our experience justifies theirs. They deserve input too. Why do I deserve RSI when we could've had structural editors.

It is hookable so you can FSRS images and windows -- even nested instances of Lasso. I was trying to figure out what it'd be like to do the "How to Read a Book" style repetition for PDF's as you go through them i.e. you select content to be OCR'd, or screen shot material, or can write summaries, and across the following days it prompt you that information. Food for future thought.

One thing I've done in Lasso is add support to text so that it can always be used for TTS. In addition, every "frame" can have it's contents OCR'd.

I've used the combo to TTS whole books at this point.

So accessibility is the basis of the primitives and this is turned into core functionality... recently I added FSRS (spaced repetition.)

I'm now using the text TTS in Lasso for language learning -- both Romanian and Russian.

The LLM black box is the last domino. The Waterworld has begun, in more ways than one, and some of us, perhaps the last of us, have set adrift on small atolls seeking dry land but the dirt is going to run out soon.

Digital sovereignty is not a total solution to this. It's local dissolution. Same problem closer to home, which is better, but remember there is no turning the clock back. The systems as they are is where you start -- you'll get a local reddit, google, and app store, etc.. but when they hit the market who are they going to going to be doing deals with? Visa, Mastercard at least. Total digital sovereignty al la China hasn't fixed bad behaviors from enterprises - but I'm sure you'll fair better.

It's become too capital intensive to fight them. They can be unprofitable for decades or more but you need to put food on the kitchen table. No cooperative or niche you can carve out can save you against this. Besides they changing the rules too -- no vpns, no GrapheneOS, etc..

Yes the internet as we currently have it would have to change. You would need human scale organizations to be able to handle their communities. That's great, anti-fragile with lots of competition. Having rights is hard, it's scary even, but rights come with responsibilities. Keeping this rule in place does more than prevent Big Tech from taking responsibility. It actively harms competition. What has enabled them to grow beyond reasonable scale has allowed them to prevent alternatives.

Data center construction protests should continue but really we need to stop reacting and start fixing the structural issues.

We have to go after Section 230.

This rule alone allows for Big Tech. It allows them to build companies that not suited to the communities they harbor. They are no longer choosing just what and who to attenuate and amplify -- they determine what is content. LLM's are the final algorithmic black box. Not because we can't understand them but because they say we can't.

I'm full of asides today, but "phenotropic programming" is almost perfect for Syndicated actors. Not sure how people feel about Lanier these days, but I do reckon his prognoses way back in '03 is right -- our information theory is part of the blame. I've begun using "situated software" as my preferred term for this category though.

@Quasit@beige.party they are very heavy into providing critical education to workers directly. Audiobooks, long form content, and building community for lectures. Ear buds while your in your delivery vehicle or at a warehouse kind of stuff while being into philosophy and theory. There is an offshoot of them called "The Dangerous Maybe," that is all digital and more philosophy based, I've come to enjoy aswell.

Slight tangent, I only recently learned of TU. Some of you may know I'm from Idaho (though I'm now in Eastern Europe), which is where they are based. I didn't realize until listening to some of their videos these were some of the people I was dealing with in the Boise DSA that drove me up the wall. To be clear I was never in the DSA, just not partisan as being a Dem severely limits you in a R+30 state.

Theory Underground has a concept they call "Internet 4.0" which is something I want to embrace. It's a physical place (or a series of them) with a permanent presence for people to be able to "disconnect."

Take an online community, make a place for it, and then make the digital aspect of that community an optional fixture of the community.

How do we make these junctions the points for tools like Dynamicland. Digital public commons without the burden of the digital network.
