@Rycochet @zzt It's even worse than that, really - Mike Masnick himself has gone so far into AI psychosis that he actively supports suicide if it's encouraged by AI (https://arthfach.com/blog/mike-masnick-supports-suicide.shtml) it's no surprise that his staff is nearly as deluded themselves.

@lproven @theregister And people wonder why I go after Red Hat *and* all the downstream distros (like Bazzite) for being pro-AI as well. This is why.

@lproven @theregister It had been about fifteen years for me and I felt much the same way. Compared to then, this time was a breeze. I did have some trouble on the first computer I installed it on (Framework 13) but it turns out that would be because it was overheating on compile, which caused segfaults. On my desktop with an actually adequate cooling system everything went just fine and I got everything I needed set up and going with minimal issues. What helps, I think, is that modern Gentoo is using sane defaults that have good general applicability without being too large or too limited. It means you can do much less USE flag tweaking for a good, stable, functional system.

@lproven @theregister Glad I moved to Gentoo and away from SystemD, and that I never used Flatpaks. Native is always better whenever possible, honestly.

@Krita Oh thank goodness you release AppImages! I couldn't get Krita to compile for the life of me on Gentoo; this means I can still use it and I am SO HAPPY! Thank you so much!

@nitinkhanna @adrienne That, unfortunately, is something LUKS doesn't handle. Once the system is online and the passphrase provided to unlock the volume, it stays unlocked until the system is shut down. I'm working on the basis of "if we're at the point where the government is going to surgically remove the system from the datacenter while keeping it powered on and I get no prior notice that they're attempting that so I can't shut the system down, we're more screwed than I as a small provider can handle," to be honest.

@nitinkhanna @adrienne I use LVM-on-LUKS and have the header backup stored with my attorney.

@nitinkhanna @adrienne If that's a serious question - https://bear-den.org It's plain old normal encryption in transit - TLS (plus encryption at rest) - but it's a known, well studied technology and I don't comply with bullshit.

@adrienne RIGHT?! I literally just posted about how creepy AI folks are on my last post about leaving Bluesky; it's like some kind of psychosis-based cult and it's unnerving as all get.

@lproven @theregister Love the article but dear lord I hope they do not drop Xfce. It's such a clean feeling interface that just gets out of my way and lets me do what I need to do.
