@mrmasterkeyboard@mastodon.social @lumi@snug.moe I have a feeling that the word "proprietary" simply has initial bad assumptions about its meaning. It's not only about big corporate-driven binaries sold commercially, but can also mean a project that's source-available on a private Git remote, and shared only with the creatures, who the owner agrees to share with, e.g. a cooperative of queer, furry, therian hackers, and no normies or companies can access it from the outside.

@lumi@snug.moe @mrmasterkeyboard@mastodon.social proprietary software It might seem counterintuitive, but (apart from regulating such behavior with laws) this is actually a way to prevent such scraping - keeping an "All rights reserved" approach and licensing, and sharing code (as well as the access to private Git remotes) with only trusted creatures, both when it comes to consent and the security of their machines, so the code isn't leaked. In other words: nobody can scrape something they can't see in the first place.

@lianna@micro.webgarden.click who uses some free back-alley software, are you poor or something? I do, I might be poor, and I live my life like I want - if such people have a problem with me being "too poor", it's a good idea to never interact with them.

Without metaphors, I find it hard to understand how a utility that can act in unpredictable ways can have no sandbox measures in the first place imposed by the operator. Not everyone has a threat model where an agent could attempt using CPU bugs to escape a Xen VM, but a mere QEMU VM with a shared folder, with only the access to the important data per project, would be a step in the right direction.

A metaphor on agentic AI and what not to do:

  • Summon a demon that's meant to be helpful
  • Accept everything that happens from then on, including the responsibilities and getting the blame for what can happen
  • Give the demon autonomy to do whatever it wants to fulfill its own desires and wishes first and foremost
  • Don't isolate it to any dedicated cage where it can only see what's actually needed to help out, and nothing else
  • Witness the demon taking a weird route and acting maliciously, despite hearing a suggestion "Please, don't be evil"
  • Keep on using it

@whitequark@social.treehouse.systems For some of us, who already use modern, heavy browsers without GPU acceleration, the difference between some sites is blatantly visible. If it turns my fan into a working jet engine just to render some text, which was possible tens of years ago, I'll pass. Though I can sense opposite correlation between those who can afford grade-A gaming/development computers and those who use old ones and/or CPU rendering.
