@roadskater @seano the one on Seventh Ave in Brooklyn still has a cafe. B&N in general used to have comfy chairs years ago but you can imagine how customers treated those. (If you can't imagine you can find out on Reddit from former employees. It's not for the weak of stomach.)

@seano my general take is that at least it means the bank isn't closing the branch. Like would I go out of my way to hang out there, probably not. But I like that *someone* is trying to make their retail experience pleasant, maybe even lowering the barrier to financial advisement a bit if you want that, etc. etc. It's Barnes and Noble but for money. (And they probably learned not to use soft furniture from B&N's mistakes lol)

@paco@infosec.exchange the thing about them being good at their jobs is true, unfortunately. I liked your comment about him missing his calling. The whole "you're stupid for getting scammed" attitude is so irritating. Puts the blame in the wrong place entirely. Which helps the scams continue bc then people are ashamed to talk about them, which would help warn others away.

@paco@infosec.exchange she was going to send the money, and the only reason she didn't is bc she did not have it liquid and called her guy to move some cash from a retirement account. He convinced her to call me before doing anything. I was able to get ahold of my brother pretty quickly and that was that, but... If she'd had that amount in her account in the moment it would've been gone. (Bro works in a hospital and doesn't quickly respond to calls, but does to texts. Mom doesn't text.)

@paco@infosec.exchange when this kind of stuff happened to my mom, I told her that some scammers are very good at their jobs and that's why it works. My mom was more frequently targeted over the phone (her landline, not even her cell). She got the "I need bail money" one. That one is really effective bc it is time sensitive and the caller (posing as my brother) asked her not to tell her other kids bc he was embarrassed. He claimed he'd gotten punched in the nose which covered voice differences.

@iris@neuromatch.social @futurebird@sauropods.win Also, granted I was a kid who didn't worry about grades in the first place but - I'm not totally convinced kids use LLMs only to save grades. They want to spend time on other things too. I *liked* learning and even homework. But that homework was perpetually done during the class before it was due, bc I had other things I wanted to do after school. Or I just forgot about it until it was the next day already.

Thinking out loud... maybe spelling out the purpose of the feedback would help, especially if the essays are voluntary. And that it takes time for you to give might also help. I know it seems obvious but... kids (and adults!) are where they are. The comment about not spending more time on feedback than was spent on the task is perfect, but maybe more kids need to hear it.
