@kjhealy@mastodon.social I almost didn't need to look to guess that the first reply would tell you the problem was "not with the make file but with your system" https://stat.ethz.ch/pipermail/r-help/1999-December/005581.html

obviously it's just engagement bait, but presenting a list of 100 novels as "the greatest literature" is indeed…symptomatic. Perhaps they would enjoy this slide I made for my intro students

Spare a thought for the everything-is-bayesian-updating people. Once champions of smug-probability-knowing, now out-smugged by purveyors of it-just-works! brute-force maximum likelihood estimation

Sora, generate a black comedy combining nuclear annihilation and paranoia about impure substances entering the body; include a mad inventor running loose in the military-industrial complex

wile-e-coyote-looking-down moment on papers here for me. Yo, software engineers: congratulations on a technical achievement fully comparable to the invention of fracking

Thanks to John Thompson's Book Wars, I even know what BookBub is. My 2013 monograph, misfiled under its series title, could be your "next read" for cheap!

nationwide Canvas outage thanks to ransomware attack. It's ironic, you see, because Canvas is, in its essence, itself a ransomware attack on higher education

+1 to implication that literacy is the very heart of the LLMatter:
“The number that I am interested in is something like ‘How many words of normal business English per day can a manager read and check for accuracy and sense, without their mind wandering and without going mad?’”

@benmschmidt@sigmoid.social video arcade tokens: talk about dead metaphors! And I still have T tokens I hoarded for so long I missed the window to exchange them for Charlie-value. To me the typographic metaphor is easier (a word is like a letter, especially if you have idiograms on the brain). But your point about type coins is good. And reminiscent of Lisa Gittelman on the way models were actual three-dimension objects before they were abstractions.

@benmschmidt@sigmoid.social good rabbit hole. Why do you think numismatic? Looking back cursorily at Peirce it's not obvious he's thinking coins, and the numismatic meanings, which I just learned 60 seconds ago, don't seem like a very clear metaphor for the semiotic ones.

Victory for CFU-UAW! NYU's non-tenure-track faculty voted 553-72 for the union. Those are the numbers we like to see. This is a nationally significant victory for the fastest-growing category of faculty in the US—and for all who care about the quality of higher education.

There is power in a union! #solidarity
