My toots in French are probably of no interest to non-French readers anyway. And the other way around.

RE: https://mamot.fr/@pluralistic/116883056238329898 By the way, "accidentally rediscovering the already-known" is, when you think of it, how every genAI answer works, only worse, because genAI users, by definition, have outsourced learning, and therefore discovery, to genAI, and genAI does not *learn* (it is, at best, fed) and therefore does not *discover* anything, let alone rediscover.
Quoting
Cory Doctorow @pluralistic@mamot.fr

"What do we learn from all this? Mostly the same thing we learned when the crypto bros repeatedly rediscovered financial fraud, or when effective altruists decided the most effective altruism was to buy themselves a castle, or when ride share companies kept accidentally reïnventing the bus. If you start by ignoring everything that we already know, the best you can ever hope for is to accidentally rediscover the already-known."

@jonny@neuromatch.social Had one such experience of this with Copilot. Asked whether binary code meant for an ATMEGA88P would work out-of-the-box on an ATMEGA188P., it confidently said it would, then when told it didn't, successively summoned an awful lot of reasons why, each not applicable to our case (and not specific to the question)... ... Except the *most obvious* reason, the one sitting in *plain sight* (for anyone working with these chips, anyway) in the chips' common *datasheet*. (TBH, I already knew the answer, and only ran the whole experiment to show some colleague how deferring expertise to some AI was a serious waste of time.)

@jonny@neuromatch.social Just a side note: in France at least, and possibly in all of Europe, copyright does not apply on *everything* one does; it needs to, quote, be original, end quote, by which it is meant that the work should bear the mark of their author's personality. This, IIRC, is why *some* AI-generated content was ruled not copyrightable art, because however much prompting went into it, the result did not bear the would-be author's mark (all the more since the same prompting of the same gen AI will produce different results each time).

@jonny It's almost as if the whole point (alright: one of the main points) of the scam is to convince the user that "the AI knows best".

@AnarchoCatgirlism One thing I notice about this is their liberal use of what I suspect are em dashes in their instructions to The Machine. I like to think they used em dashes instead of perfectly serviceable periods, colons, semicolons, and others, precisely because they *discovered* (or were reminded of) the existence of em dashes; and that they (re)discovered them because of the (luckily short-lived) urban legend about em dashes supposedly being a sure marker of genAI textual output as opposed to human textual output. Plus, who know, maybe some magical thinking that if genAIs use em dashes, maybe they understand them better?
