This weekend, I read "Weekend at Bernie's", a recent blog post from @andrewnez@mastodon.social in which he tries to quantify how many of the critical dependencies of various ecosystems are effectively "dead". The post was very interesting, and I like the methodology he used. But what I noticed (besides the relatively high percentage of "dead" critical dependencies) was the large number of dependencies that are in an "unknown" state, i.e., for which we don't know whether they are maintained or not.

This got me thinking, and I came up with a proposal:

I would be very curious to know what you think about it!

@andrewnez I'm obliged to do some advertising for tools that were developed in a research context for just this use case: https://github.com/alien-tools/breakbot for Java, with static analysis (by Ochoa, Degueule and @jrfaller) and https://github.com/rocq-community/coq-nix-toolbox for Coq/Rocq project but which would be feasible to generalize to other ecosystems (by Cohen and me). @djc

At least one of the awarded consortium operates proprietary American cloud technology (GCP). After greenwashing and open-washing, here comes the time of sovereign-washing!

@thisismissem@hachyderm.io Just in case some people think that signing is useless because they are from a country already above the threshold: that's not the case. It's very likely that the initiative will meet the 7 country threshold (Netherlands has made it already, and Slovenia is nearly there) and yet will fail to meet the global 1 000 000 signatures. So, right now, everybody must sign!
