The resolution of the DSC season 2 plot necessitated a one-way trip through a time portal that dumped them out in the 32nd century.
About 100 years before their arrival, there was an event known as the Burn that briefly caused all dilithium to go inert simultaneously, leading to...a lot of destruction, as any ship with an active warp core went boom at once. Travel and communication became extremely difficult, a bunch of worlds seceded from the Federation, and the galaxy generally fractured into regional powers (and organized groups of pirates).
Discovery's spore drive was critical in hopping around the galaxy, finding a new source of dilithium, and ensuring another Burn doesn't happen. Long story, not important to SFA. Planets have been rejoining the Federation ever since, including Earth.
Other points of note: the Temporal Wars happened, and time travel is now illegal. The Romulans and Vulcans have reunified and live on Vulcan, which has been renamed "Ni'Var".
