POOP! POOP and BUTTS!

AuDHD and cPTSD. Trying to figure my bullshit out.

I like walking, hiking, swimming, weightlifting, photography, drawing/painting, and making stuff.

Generally on Kaurna, Peramangk, Ngarrindjeri, Ngangaruku, or Ngadjuri land.

I have trouble replying to messages and I may disappear. Something terrible happened in 2023 and it has made it hard to feel safe with other people. It is not your fault. Thank you for being patient with me.

Ahaha so there are even more secret ProRAW features I wasn't aware of that are quietly doing THINGS and I don't know how that affects the rainbow...

Not bad for a Kmart Photos cheapie print. Probably as good as those get. Make sure your file is in sRGB.

After a long struggle to get Apple's raw file from HDR into sRGB gamut… and still look nice… and more struggle with very very tiny arcsinh stretching and autoBR processing… …I finally got this rainbow into gamut enough that it displays nicely on things that AREN'T Apple, and I could print it!

I am pleased that they took the little Daiso screwdriver set. It'll actively damage nearly anything they try to repair with them. May it strip the heads of all your screws, jerks.

It could have been worse, but it's just another cost... ... and perhaps the worst thing is the administrative burden at a time when multiple things have suddenly happened, all at once--and they all demand responses faster than I can process them. Which sucks, because I'm dealing with a volume and complexity of simultaneous demands that would challenge MOST people... but I have AuDHD... ...which somehow means that each individual system and demand thinks they have given me one tiny thing and I'm being unreasonable about being unable to cope with it... instead of actually listening to what I'm saying when I say I need some support.

The car was unlocked, which means people will automatically decide it's "my fault" rather than suggesting that people, perhaps, should not take things from other people's cars anyway. The car is unlocked because it's too difficult to manage my AuDHD son's safety AND lock the car reliably. So there's a reason I don't keep anything in there worth anything. It's just unfortunate that the poles had been used recently.

Well great. Some arsehole went through my car overnight and stole a mobility device: my trekking poles. I don't need them all the time, just when my cPTSD causes a neurogenic tremor and knee instability, but they're still a mobility device, and fuck you, arseholes. There was basically nothing in the car worth anything, and I can see they really tried to find something worth money, so it's almost like they took those out of spite. Like, "fuck you for only having some bandaids and glass cleaning wipes, I'm taking these".

But yeah we... look capitalism can sell us a THING that superficially deals with A NEED but it very rarely actually.... does anything meaningful to address it... and usually makes it worse and I can probably say that about a lot of THINGS, not just this

An even worse thought occurs: the possibility of excess glutamate (without everything else you need to make GABA) leading to increased central/brain glutamate. Which would… make everything very… reactive… It'd be bad.

The thing I am not finding in the existing literature is the claim that the cross-cultural universality of umami comfort foods is evidence of a conserved neurobiological self-medication behaviour, not a coincidence of culinary tradition. Traditional whole-food preparations evolved (culturally, not genetically) to deliver the full substrate, which is why they work. Processed food industrially separated the signal from the substrate, which is why the same craving behaviour produces worse outcomes in the modern food environment.

Stress depletes GABAergic tone. We have a biological drive to restore it. We seek dietary glutamate because that's a GABA precursor we can use. Glutamate is savoury, so we have a preference for umami-flavoured foods. A "comfort food craving". This is self-medication. And Grandma's soup was a COMPLETE medication. It didn't just have the glutamate. It has the cofactors for GABA synthesis (B6, magnesium, taurine, protein). But this behaviour is also exploitable. The signal -- the umami taste -- can be separated from the rest of the nutritional matrix. The Pringle hits your tongue and the glutamate seems to satisfy the craving signal. But it doesn't resolve the deficit. So, you're in a feedback loop. You're stressed and your GABA is depleted. The processed food FEELS LIKE it's doing what you need, but it doesn't. You keep feeling like shit and you keep craving savoury food. And then we frame this as a "willpower failure" or an "emotional eating disorder" which is mechanistically incorrect and clinically counterproductive.

They talk about emotional eating and it's really interesting because there is MASSIVE variation in how people will express and act upon emotions. But all over the world we ALL went "I'm sad and I want to crawl into a warm bowl of grandma's savoury soup about it" that's kinda weird we should probably notice that?

There's ample research showing that physiological stress affects GABAergic tone. There's plenty of research showing that reduced GABAergic tone alters our food preferences and intake. They've even noticed a thing with poor diets leading to *reduced* frontal GABA but *increased* glutamate. The parallel with carbohydrates and serotonin is very well established. We also very much understand how ultra processed foods hijack our neurotransmitter systems "behavioural handles". Processed foods all exploit three neurotransmitter systems: GABA, serotonin, and dopamine. What I can't find is any study into the cross-cultural comfort food thing. This is my own observation and I can't see it formalised in any literature. But the pattern holds across: ramen (Japan), egusi soup (Nigeria), doro wat (Ethiopia), tagine (Morocco), jollof rice (West Africa), Hainanese chicken rice (Southeast Asia), bolognese (Italy), borscht (Eastern Europe), feijoada (Brazil), sancocho (Latin America), congee (East Asia), dal (South Asia), and many others. The common denominator is long-cooked protein and/or fermentation — both of which produce or concentrate free glutamate. This is not random.

And the stuff that seems to be missing, question-wise is... I can't seem to find anything addressing this mechanism. It's not like a lack of knowledge is generally driving the eating behaviour. It's not like willpower is the answer either. There doesn't seem to be anything that acknowledges that humans seem to be attempting... neurobiological self-medication... and have done, across multiple cultures... seeking dietary glutamate as a GABA-precursor. And there's nothing that also addresses how that is systematically exploited by our modern processed food environment. Or what that might mean when we ask why people eat what they do. Especially why people eat the way they do when they are stressed. There's plenty of things AROUND it, components of research across multiple fields. But nothing tying this together. At least, that I can see.

I was researching to find out what supports GABA modulation, synthesis, or availability in the body. And the dietary stuff pointed out that glutamate is the dietary precursor to GABA but you also require B6 to convert it. Magnesium is also important as it modulates GABA-A receptors and blocks NMDA glutamate receptors. Fermented foods promote GABA through the gut-GABA axis. L-theanine increases GABA activity, and taurine has mild positive allosteric modulation of GABA-A a little like magnesium. Now I know glutamate. Glutamate is delicious. You all know what it tastes like. It's umami. It's your favourite savoury comfort food. It's comforting for a reason. And pretty much every food culture worldwide has a savoury comforting dish that contains not just glutamate but everything else you need to convert it into GABA. Ramen, spaghetti bolognese, Jollof rice, chicken soup, beef stroganoff, Hainanese chicken rice, a cheese and Vegemite toastie But... we also live in a food environment that hijacks and exploits our GABA, serotonin, and dopamine seeking behaviour. And when our GABA is low it is easier to reach for something processed. There's glutamate in the Pringles. Our body knows its there. There are dopamine and GABA reward loops that see it, but no behavioural loops for us to seek the B6 and magnesium we need to actually convert and use it. We eat the whole can of Pringles. But it does nothing... and that wasn't possible until we started processing food like this. We get stuck with low GABA and systems that can't cope with stress. That whole food comfort dish gets harder to actually plan and prepare and cook. Then we shame people for their "bad choices" and "lack of willpower". You can't follow the CSIRO Total Wellbeing Diet when you are at The Sad Bastard Cookbook's rock bottom, and there seems to be nothing that meaningfully addresses, or apparently understands, this gap.

Dammit, I have a scientific question and I think it might be kind of important, but I have no idea how to get that question answered... because I can't see any current indication that this specific question HAS been answered.

@s0@cathode.church Hm. Yeah. I should... and I should probably figure out what it is about that makes me feel uncomfortable... I mean, it's a cool photo of a natural phenomenon around a local landmark and my awkward stuff about.... I dunno... self-promotion? Attention seeking? But people in the local community would probably enjoy it and I dunno why that feels scary to me

The monument is the Tjilbruke Monument, which was created in 1972 by artist John Dowie Date. The plaque at the monument reads: "This landmark is a reminder of the Kaurna Aborigines of the Adelaide Plains. It represents the creator hero Tjilbruke with the body of his nephew Kulultuwi who was slain for killing an emu against tribal law. From the spring on the beach below, Tjilbruke carried his nephew in mourning along the coast to Cape Jervis where he displayed the body to the spirits of the dead on Kangaroo Island. At each of his camps on the way his tears became the springs and water-holes of the Kaurna coastal hunting grounds. The body of Kulultuwi was later lodged in a cave near Rapid Bay. Unveiled by His Excellency the Governor of South Australia Sir Mark Oliphant, K. B. E. on 24th September 1972. This monument was raised by public subscription under the sponsorship of the South Australian museum, the Sunday Mail, and the Aboriginal community of this state. Sculptor John Dowie"

You ever need to pull over immediately because there's a rainbow?

You ever need to pull over a second time (but somewhere more picturesque) because it only intensified while you drove?
