@nasser@merveilles.town yes, of course that makes a ton of sense! I guess where I got tripped up while reading is the assertion that human-readable names require centralisation, which kind of reads as closing the door to the user ever seeing anything but random actor ID strings. I think it's worth at least noting that there is a solution to this!

@nasser@merveilles.town have you read much about petname systems? I think they would fit your goals really nicely, and it seems fairly clear how one would implement a simple one on top of sawa (participants can publish a "name" label on an actor ID that they know)

The design of Immortality makes a bit more sense to me now. Like, I was literally just writing down interesting words that were being spoken for the purpose of seeing if they were said again, and in many ways that's nearly the same thing as clicking on a telephone in a movie to switch to a different movie with a telephone in it. Carefully arrange your telephones and you can draw thematic connections between arbitrary things. Still not convinced it works, exactly, but I see how he gets there.

Then I read about a very stupid trick to watching the whole thing in chronological order, so I reset my game and did that. It's reasonably well written and terrifically well acted. The twist is pretty dumb if you actually stop and think about it, but it's a nice moment when you figure it out and are able to start really pulling on the important threads.

I tried Her Story years ago and bounced off pretty quickly; I feel like maybe I was able to follow a thread or two for a while but then quickly got very lost. Like I would do a search, watch a video, think of something I'd want to search for, never watch the other four, never be able to backtrack to them.

Turns out that the way to play it is to have a text file where you write down all the search terms you eventually want to try as you go through the clips. Found nearly everything that way.

@millihertz strange how any attempt to deviate even slightly from a libertarian definition of "open source" immediately leads to public wailing and gnashing of teeth As though it must be made unthinkable to question whether "open source" is effective in its stated goals, or whether the OSI / ESR even has the same goals as you

@Tijn @alienmelon not to mention how, because of how you temporarily lose movement control when hit, it becomes easy to accidentally get into a position where you're repeatedly attacked without any way to escape IIRC the "recoil" animation always pushes you backwards from the direction you're facing, so trying to run away can end up pushing you back towards your attacker That game is stressful as helllll

@swetland @millihertz I have a vivid memory of a RealPlayer update introducing some new bullshit behaviour, and being certain that there was at least a setting somewhere to turn it off, because how would the programmer who had been forced to add it live with themselves otherwise? and I was _right_ never dreamed I'd miss the days when I believed RealPlayer was as hostile as we'd ever let software get

@millihertz oh sure, I assume any idea that wasn't directly stolen from CP/M was just someone's pet feature, which is certainly backed up by the magic bytes of the .EXE format being the developer's initials

@millihertz I mean, if your OS has to boot on a machine with 32kb of RAM, it feels like a reasonable design decision to be able to jettison the code that loads >64kb programs when you're not in "program launching" mode
