@Annalee this is why, *if* I'm using pins, I use extra fine ones. They break before the needle does.
Many of the people around me have switched to using clips instead of pins - less distortion, not under the needle. I don't particularly like them for anything other than making sure pieces stay together as I'm moving the project around, but that's not to be sneezed at.
Also, heat sensitive markers rather that tailor's chalk on light colored fabrics.
