This is why software patents were a horrible idea. We were all warned. Still, I thought the whole objective of AV1 was to avoid any incumbrances.

It is not ‘LLM companies’. It is OpenAI. And not from buying memory either. Last year they made two deals with two major memory manufacturers, which together meant they were purchasing a significant percentage of the world’s memory production. Not even as chips you can put in a server, but as finished wafers which then have to be cut up into chips, those chips have to be put in packages, themselves tested, and then soldered down to memory modules. As far as I know, OpenAI has no ability to do this. So it seems likely they purchased a significant portion of the world’s memory production just to drive up prices and keep their competitors from having it.

Thing that bothers me is these guys are claiming to have patents over AV1. The whole point of av1 is it supposed to be free of this bullshit.

Quite true there is absolutely a place for both in all situations. And it’s why I hate absolutists who think gui’s are some sort of disease. GUIs are discoverable and intuitive, You can lay out all the options for the user so they know what they can choose and make the right choice. CLIs are powerful and scriptable, easy to automate. Neither is bad.

Not even close. Passkey is a generic technology not specific to any vendor. While there are a few versions of it, the long story short is it uses an encryption key you have to authenticate you rather than a password. This makes phishing extremely difficult if not impossible. There’s lots of passkey implementations. All the major browsers have one built in with their included password managers. Most good password managers like BitWarden or 1Password also support pass keys. And if you want to be extra secure, the passkey can be an actual hardware token like a YubiKey. So yeah you see Google pushing passkeys a lot, and if you use Google password manager it will store your pass keys. But you also see Apple pushing it, and Microsoft also.

Look up a product called Thrift. You can get it on Amazon. It’s a type of flake drain cleaner, comes in a bottle. Basically run your shower on super hot for a few minutes to heat up the pipe, then pour a bunch of this stuff down, and a bit more hot water. Leave it alone for a few minutes, then flush with hot water. Unlike Drano, this stuff actually works. Originally I found it on a plumbing subreddit. I’ve done it to my shower a few times and it seems to have a longer lasting effect every time, like it’s actually cleaning out the pipe.

The crazy thing is, none of these articles seem to want to admit that AI is bad. As the old quote goes- “A time is coming when men will go mad, and when they see someone who is not mad, they will attack him saying, “You are mad, you are not like us.”” In such an environment, nobody wants to admit they are not mad, lest they be attacked. Or as someone else said- I want a future where machines cook and clean and do menial work, so us humans can focus on art and poetry and writing. Instead we have a world where machines create art and poetry and books, so the humans can focus on cleaning and menial work. I don’t like this timeline.

I couldn’t agree more. Acting like a million dollar company is important. A million dollar company would recognize that reliable, continuous production and sales is more important to growth than the occasional hickup or a few extra bucks in the payroll budget. Thus, the million dollar company would hire sufficient staff that an occasional absence, even at a critical moment, would not harm production or sales. And a million dollar company would recognize that hiring sufficient staff is a wiser and more cost effective strategy than a possible labor lawsuit along with the associated bad PR.

What’s there to sue for? Companies shut down product lines and brands all the time.
