Traditional conservatives are looking to conserve existing power structures. They believe that those in power deserve to be in power, and those without power deserve to be without power, and they seek to keep it that way. In the American Revolution, conservatives were monarchists. In the Civil War, conservatives supported slavery. In the civil rights era, conservatives supported Jim Crow and opposed equal rights, etc, etc, etc. They’re always looking to maintain and strengthen existing power structures. (Regardless of how unjust those power structures may be.) But, again, modern ‘conservatives’ are straying more toward fascism, so that begins to break down. What they’re trying to ‘conserve’ now is an imagined golden era that never truly existed in the first place, where their in-group supposedly had even more power than they ever really did, and where out-groups didn’t even exist.

You know, looking into these, I did learn things. Yes, I already knew about them, but I didn’t know all of it. For one thing, I didn’t realize where Ruby Ridge actually was. I used to live about an hour’s drive away from there, and I’ve actually been within 10 miles of there without knowing it!

With the resources they have -- and the goal of having security and control over their digital supply lines -- I don't see why they wouldn't roll their own distro. Maybe heavily based on an existing distro (looking at you, Debian) but something that's completely under their control, so they can choose for themselves exactly what packages are included, what security settings are used as defaults, when and if to update things, etc. ------- Edit: after (gasp) actually reading the article, it seems that each department within the French government will be responsible for their own implementation, which means they might all end up using different distros in different departments.

Despite their insistence on ‘simplicity’ and ‘elegance’, Gnome is by far the most resource-hungry DE that exists in the Linux ecosystem.

That, and maybe snap packages. It can’t be good for RAM usage to have every app trying to load its own independent system of dependencies. That’s got to lead to a lot of duplication in dependencies loaded into RAM.

I'm using my 2016 Chromebook with 2GB until it literally dies. (Sucker has 16+ hours of battery life. Pretty nice, actually!)

My *older*-ass laptop has 2GB, so it's kind of an issue for me. (But I never attempted to put Ubuntu on that in the first place. It's running a much older, purpose-built version of Linux.)

Been working fine for me. Honestly, though, haven’t noticed any real difference between Ubuntu Studio and vanilla Kubuntu, except that it came pre-installed with a few of the things I would have installed anyway.

People are going to hate me for this, but here goes... I'm using Ubuntu. Ubuntu Studio, to be precise.
