"Monthly users hovered in the low hundreds of thousands"

That's the Metsverse, on which some silicon Valley folk have lavished the best part of US$100 billion (or about 1 AI seed round, in new money).

How much money did others spend building things in the Metaverse, or buying virtual property there?

And is there a more meta company name than Meta, given this grizzly history?

@Jeroen89@mastodon-belgium.be This phenomenon merits a more emotive name! As for the graphic - in all too many rural places, there's barely an insect to be seen. Happily, I came across a veritable insect hotspot this week - a small farm in Sussex that has been chemical free for a decade or more... Insects everywhere - more than I can remember seeing for a long time!

RE: @Fife4Europe@mastodon.scot

This article made me wonder: how many times have US troops in Europe taken action to defend NATO allies, and how many times have the bases been used as staging posts for American military action in other countries?

Oh boy: we're going to need a bigger, better word. Cory Doctorow's "enshittification" is one thing, but the systematic dismantling of thinking ("cognitive surrender") enabled by these LLM derivatives is mind-bending.

The attached is from a LinkedIn post by someone from that Big M software company...

Anyone who knows data analysis (remember "big data"?) will surely have had the same visceral reaction as me - ad hoc analysis of data in spreadsheets is a hopeless way to extract reliable insight.

This description from Wolf Blitzer sums up the last DC drama rather well.

First, a detailed description claiming to have been just a few feet away.

Then "I didn't actually see the shooting".

Is it me, or is this like a bad school play??!?

@Paladin@mastodon.nu @randahl@mastodon.social It's really tough. Then again, if you run a business where data security matters - especially outside the USA - thrn this is a problem with which you must eventually grapple. It's easy to put in the 'too hard' basket - but at some point Microsoft could easily be required to disable software in a particular country... [Added] Meanwhile, I see China began a fairly systematic effort to shift to different operating systems around five years ago...

So there is so much they could do - easily - to provide a safer environment. But that costs money and loses revenue, so for the most part they just go for the profit. Governments have big levers to use, but most are afraid to use them...

@Gargron@mastodon.social Bravissimo Eugene! Every founder's dream should be to build an organisation that can be run by others: this is, surely, the best mark of maturity. Mastodon is a truly wonderful - and exceptionally important - creation. Traditional investors and business folk might lament lack of (even) faster growth, and urge the raising of much more capital to 'leverage' what you and the team have built so far. But, as you obviously know, that type of investment sows the seeds of enshittification.
