pirate because it’s a way to save money and, sometimes, a better service too, but I’m not an activist or evangelical in my support for it. Yeah, I am though. lol.

Thats interesting, see, I wasn’t aware of this at all. I’m so glad I joined the Fediverse. I’m basically getting a 20 year massive brain update overhaul in weeks.

Personally i think people are throwing away money and freedom for convenience. but thats just my opinion so please don’t shoot me. I’ve never used any of those services, never used any streaming service either, i never game online (always offline against the cpu) and i don’t use music streaming services either. but that isn’t to say i’m trying to tell anyone here to stop using steam (although i did make a remark like that once), use whatever you like, its just me personally i never used it and never will. and i’m pretty surprised to see any steam users in a piracy lemmy, thats all. i wasn’t expecting that.

Yeah see, theres a ton of stuff like that, that I don’t know. So its good that I asked here. I’m basically a fossile. (52) There was no steam on the Atari 2600 or Commodore 64.

So far I haven’t tried Linux yet. But the way its been going with Windows them even wanting to make it some sort of SaaS OS (?) I guess? Then i’m willing to take the plunge. Kinda wondering if its worth it, in example regular games like GTA, L.A. Noire, all that stuff will that still work under Linux? Sorry if thats a dumb question, its just I know next to nothing about Linux other than that its an other OS.

Genuine question: why does criticism of Steam seem to be so unpopular here?

Something I’ve noticed in this community is that whenever I criticize Steam, or point out something I don’t like about the platform, I tend to get a ton of downvotes. And honestly, I’m just curious why. This is a piracy-oriented community, so I find it kinda interesting that Steam seems to have such a strong positive reputation here. I’m not saying people shouldn’t like Steam, obviously everyone has their own reasons for using it. Steam is convenient, has huge sales, supports Linux, has a massive library of games, etc. I completely get why people use it. I’m just wondering where the line is for people. For example, do you like Steam despite the DRM because the convenience outweighs the negatives? Do you see Steam as fundamentally different from other forms of DRM? Do you consider Valve one of the “good guys” in the industry? Or do you simply see Steam as a convenient storefront and don’t really think much about the DRM side of it? Or maybe you actually agree with some of the criticism of Steam, but just think it’s being exaggerated. For me personally, I don’t use Steam because I don’t really like having my games tied to an account and a platform. I’d rather have the actual files, be able to back them up, move them around, mod them and know that I still have them years later. That’s basically what I was getting at in that video I made about Steam as well. But I’m not trying to start another “Steam bad!” argument here. I’m genuinely curious because sometimes the reaction seems surprisingly pro-Steam considering the nature of this community. So what is it about Steam that you guys actually appreciate?

Steam has been a blight on society ever since it started. Its been a scam since day 1 and ever since. Yet people keep falling for it for “convenience” and laziness.

My bad, it was 35 days before the official launch. Windows Longhorn was what we called AIDS Vista back in the day, it came after XP. I never used Vista myself, I went from C64 to Amiga to Win 95, to Win 98 SE, to XP, to 7 and now 10.

I love that feeling, its all over the news that something is just out and you already have it in the palm of your hand. I’ve had that several times in life, first time I had that happen was with the game “Iron Hand” on the Commodore 64 not a lot of people remember that game because I don’t think it was ever even published officially. Then later in life I had Windows XP on a CD a few days before its official release, and later with Wolverine which was awesome it still even had the notes on the screen one scene i remember it said “Nails grow” as Victor touches the glass of a window. People don’t realize the absolutely awesome times people can have as a pirate. Its a very jolly, fun, exciting life. I been sailing the high seas since 1988 and it has been a great old time.

Personally I’m hoping for some type of piracy technology that will even let us download the movies before they where even made. How? I don’t know, nor do I care how its done, just create this tech already. We need it.

Major major out of sync. You can reproduce it I suppose the way I would attempt it, and maybe you know what I do wrong in such a case: What I would do (to attempt doing it) is take two different versions of the movie, maybe one has good video quality but is in russian, and the other has a good english audio track with it right. And so I wanna take the audio track of the good one and lay it under the good footage in powerdirector. i’d try and find the right lineup for the audio to sync it with the video, but then eventually if you go further down the line in powerdirector (or even produce it and forward the movie like to halfway trough) the audio will be way out of sync. I think it may have to do with bitrates and stuff but I have no idea why. and heck I used to even work in the industry back in the early 90s for TV this should be a breeze for me. but this oldtimer is stupid, I think. there has to be a way to solve this, and if anyone has any suggestions you’re more than welcome to tell me because i’d love to know.

My problems with that usually go beyond that, its weird the few times in my life I tried i had the audio matching up in the beginning where I set it right, and then eventually going way out of sync. Which is weird because you’d think well its the same movie, the timing would be the same as an audio file from a different version of it, but no such luck :(

always a pickle to do, because it tends to always go out of sync. you’d have to find a way to get the timing right over the entire movie.

Where I lived not very common, it was more common in the 80s. I still remember my friends not believing I had already seen E.T., yet I did thanks to “Video Studio Leo” where I grew up, in Haarlem. Betamax rulez.
