The thing that often gets lost when the (corporate, capitalist owned) media talks about Silicon Valley "innovation" is that what's being innovated is new ways to syphon value to shareholders. That's the whole business of capitalism. I've long griped that the people who come out to play apolgoetics for capitalists misunderstand the terms that capitalists use. For the longest time, it's been "efficiency". For the last 30 years, it's been "innovation". They're both being abused in the same way, though -- the innovations are entirely about more efficiently funneling our money into their pockets. This is why capitalists have been excited about SV for 30+ years now -- they promise a less leaky pipe. But now? Now they've realized that we'll even do the work for free. We're content. We're providing the value. They can try to monetize us in both directions. That's a whole new level of "efficiency".

Mastodon is a bunch of random peoples' websites. It's not a place. It's not a network. It's some website software that anyone can run, like Wordpress. Wordpress moderation isn't "broken" because you can't read anyone else's blog posts from any given blog.

If you build something profitable on the back of copyright infringement, you have something you can, ultimately, settle out of court for, should they be able to afford good enough lawyers. But if you're just giving it away... Well, the rent seekers can't ever get anything from that.
