On this International Workers’ Day, we concluded a workshop that brought together representatives from the AI industry, data vendors (platforms and BPOs), and civil society to discuss how to operationalize frameworks, principles, and regulations for decent working conditions throughout the data enrichment pipeline and the AI supply chain. My main takeaway is that although change is slowly happening, it is possible, but it won’t be effective without the collective participation of workers.

Quick professional update: I have signed a book contract with the University of California Press to publish my first book on data work and extractivism! I will also be finishing the manuscript next year as a visiting fellow at Cornell Tech. I would love to connect with colleagues in New York City!
