The Foundation behind Wikipedia cut its hiring map nearly in half and called it streamlining. Most crowdsourcing projects fail, for the same reason most human projects fail: the world is indifferent to our hopes, and the hard things are hard. The few successes everyone cites look inevitable in hindsight, the way survivors always do. The question is not whether crowds can be powerful. They plainly can.
