It's the same way comedy works but just the other way around. I like the psychological part of horror and how it works :) Hit me up if you want to talk more about spooky unsettling things that might work for your game ☺️👍🏼

Just the very idea that there is something else, unknown thing out there together with you, is terrifying. Even those it doesn't really exist The unknown is what scariest. The unexplainable. The moment it is explained it stops being scary. Ghosts, darkness, monsters. Scary. The start of horror movies are often the scariest for that reason.

@bitbraindev@mastodon.gamedev.place the joy of finding a light post in Alan Wake, only for the light bulb to burst can't be described. And when you finally get under a light and can breathe for a second, you don't wanna leave it. You also find notes that tells you what is about to happen, which arguably is worse than not knowing 😂 Just overall great psychological horror and anxiety but not too much either. Truly a master piece in that regard

@bitbraindev@mastodon.gamedev.place some of the most terrifying games on the planets are: Outlast: limited vision for both you and hostiles. Can't attack, only run and hide Alien isolation: can't kill the alien, only hide or temporarily chase it off. Fucking thing has two brain. One that knows where you are, and one that doesn't. Alan wake: a master piece in settings the atmosphere of the game with using jump scares and plenty of ways to fight back. Highly recommend testing it out and it's often on sales 👍🏼
