@kathrynhello@adlsolarpunk.net some public libraries have board games that u can borrow or play there - the City library has a lot. This is a good way to see which ones r fun for u without spending 1 billion dollars. I also like the game Hive because it has bugs and is fun and can be played lots of different times without becoming too repetitive. It is like chess (two player moving pieces strategy game). If u want to play games with more people I can think of others but not right now.

The traffic on a friday night entirely depends on the events on - I believe there's no football on which makes a huge difference (football = bad to be in city)

@atriplex@adlsolarpunk.net Graffiti, and (perhaps to a lesser extent) stickers and wheatpaste posters, seems to hold something that mural paintings in our city don't. I think it's the spontaneous nature of graff, being a clear marker of a person that builds as more people tag a spot - the relationship between artist and location feels more direct, as it doesn't have to go through all the hoops a mural may have to (or may be subjected to post-painting. The building owner has final say on what stays on the building, no matter how many people like it!) Again, not an endorsement of graffiti/tagging as a whole - there are some awful ones out there - more observation on the function of the form. Stencils occupy an interesting space, sometimes corporate sometimes earnest. There are some around my suburb that arose when the banksy (ugh) exhibition was in town that have been left alone by the council. They are so edgelord annoying, saying things like "graffiti is a crime" (or words to that effect). Groan city. There's one of the Joker nearby too and I can't tell if it's related or not. We Live In a Suburb.

@atriplex@adlsolarpunk.net So true - I am not against murals as a whole, which I did not clarify and instead just used a vomit emoji. I am talking specifically of the mural culture that is in Adelaide (tho by no means unique to here), where they are frequently commissioned by business or the city council as an attempt at beautifying/interestingafying (<-- real word) a place, that imposes itself on a place and the people that use it rather than emerging organically. They are also often used as a means of squashing tagging out of spaces and other informal forms of street art. And many of artists that make them do not bother to create them in relation to the space well! And many of them are an attempt at making an ugly building look good - in many cases I would prefer a less ugly building/car park/whatever etc. Obviously building constructors and mural painters/commissioners are rarely overlapping groups... So, this is not to say that I have problems with all murals - there are some spectacular ones out there! - I just think that many of the murals I see around the city are not very good, and not made very thoughtfully Interesting that u should mention the burnside shopping centre mural. It looks very much like the work of Seb Humphreys/Order55, who has been very hit and miss for me in the many years I have been aware of his work (I had a big street art interest in 2014). Some of his are interesting in how he has pushed spray paint techniques, and some feel very empty of feeling, the burnside one included. I think for me it's because it is so clearly tied to the commercial nature of the site it's hard to see it as an earnest interest in form and colour that some of his other, more illegal, past works have been But yes, cities need beauty and color! But what would it look like if our architects were allowed more capacity for beauty in their designs? What if they had better green spaces? I don't make these demands of murals, but they can be treated a bandaid solution to deeper issues

Does anyone else feel patronised by art installation pieces in the city with bright colours and lights? They feel like they're supposed to be about "creating an experience for people" more than anything else. And don't get me started on murals 🤮 This isn't to say that I am a public art hater - I love a good piece of public art! But the fact that they are investments on such a larger scale than a lot of other artworks means that it's hard to not see such wasted opportunity when they fall flat. Anybody got any favourite pieces of public art?
