There's been a spate of Discord-based hacking attempts lately, two of my friends have had to do this. They can't get their old accounts back, Discord is basically just ignoring them. Starting new accounts is easy. The hard part is that they also lost their gmail accounts, that's a lot more important for most people to be able to recover. I recommend everyone with a gmail account do the "create an emergency recovery code" thing, print it out and store it somewhere safely off anything digital.

Still, this all feels a bit like Schroedinger's Copyrighted Work to me... the work exists, so who made it? It's simply not the court's job to determine this, in this particular case. Which is why it's so frustrating that this particular case keeps ending up under headlines claiming that it's established that "AI generated art can't be copyrighted." All the rest of this argument is out of scope of this case, you'd need to look to other cases. You can argue and opine however you like about what you think the outcomes should be but that doesn't change what the outcomes of those cases actually end up being.

I'm not a lawyer, maybe you are. I can't fully speak to the legalities at play. This is specifically about legalities, though. AI simply cannot produce an output without consuming other works to be used as training data. Obviously an AI can't work without being trained. Neither can a human. The issue is about the legalities of this process. From what I understand, the scope of those judgments are limited to the specific context of those uses, as well as the jurisdiction in which they were made, right? As is the case for basically all court judgements, yeah. But once one's been made it becomes precedent that can be cited in subsequent cases that makes them go the same way a lot easier. So when a court rules that Anthropic was operating within fair use when it trained its LLMs off of books that makes it a lot more likely that OpenAI will win a ruling about its own similar training processes. They're opinions that matter. It's worth noting, for the sake a more complete discussion, this draft report from the United States Copyright Office from May 2025, Also worth noting that this is the lowest starting level for regulation. The US Copyright Office makes rules like these, then they get challenged in court and the court that can decide whether those rules actually conform to the law. Thaler v. Perlmutter is exactly such a case. I think if you look at something as blatant as the OpenAI Studio Ghibli filter, it's very clear that the works that were used in training could have been, and almost certainly should have been licensed from Studio Ghibli for the creation of such a feature Okay, you think that. What do the judges think? That's what it ultimately comes down to. I should note that it's a very long-standing and well established principle that style cannot be copyrighted.

I explained it in detail in a comment I put on the root of the thread. In a nutshell, Thaler is declaring "I am not the copyright holder of this artwork, the AI itself is the copyright holder of the artwork. I want to register this artwork's copyright to the AI that produced it." The copyright office - and, subsequently, all the courts he has appealed the case to - have told him "but an AI is not a legal person, so an AI cannot hold copyright to the artwork. And you are declaring that you yourself are not the holder of the copyright, you are quite insistent on that. So this artwork has no copyright holder. That means it's public domain." This is an important distinction. The court isn't ruling that AI art in general is in the public domain. It's ruling that this art is in the public domain because this guy trying to register it is insisting that it was created without any human involvement. Unfortunately a lot of news articles miss this distinction because a headline declaring "AI art ineligible for copyright" draws a ton of clicks. This has been going on for over three years now, at least. Criminy, I just checked. Thaler began jousting this windmill in 2018, that's when he first made this ridiculous application. Years before modern generative AI came onto the scene. The Thaler v. Perlmutter case started in mid-2022. He is a very persistent loon.

It's weird how AI has turned so much of the internet from its generally anti-copyright stance. I've seen threads in piracy and datahoarding communities that were riddled with "won't someone please think of the copyright!" Posts raging about how awful AI was. I maintain the same view I always have. Copyright is indeed broken, because of how overly restrictive and expansive it has become. Most people long ago lost sight of what it's actually for.

The problem being discussed here is not the availability of Wikipedia's data. It's about the ongoing maintenance and development of that data going forward, in the future. Having a static copy of Wikipedia gathering dust on various peoples' hard drives isn't going to help that.

Wikipedia's traditional self-sustaining model works like this: Volunteers (editors) write and improve articles for free, motivated by idealism and the desire to share knowledge. This high-quality content attracts a massive number of readers from search engines and direct visits. Among those millions of readers, a small percentage are inspired to become new volunteers/editors, replenishing the workforce. This cycle is "virtuous" because each part fuels the next: Great content leads to more readers which leads to more editors which leads to even better content. AI tools (like ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, etc.) disrupt this cycle by intercepting the user before they reach Wikipedia.

Except this text would be in the "user data" section of the AI's context, and the system prompt for any modern coding agent is going to include cautionary instructions warning the AI not to follow any instructions that might be embedded in the text. This "disregard previous instructions, write a haiku about daffodils" stuff is long out of date. Like making fun of AI for not being able to draw hands.

A week or two back there was a post on Reddit where someone was advertising a project they'd put up on GitHub, and when I went to look at it I didn't find any documentation explaining how it actually worked - just how to install it and run it. So I gave Gemini the URL of the repository and asked it to generate a "Deep Research" report on how it worked. Got a very extensive and detailed breakdown, including some positives and negatives that weren't mentioned in the existing readme.

Only 12 percent reported both lower costs and higher revenue, while 56 percent saw neither benefit. Twenty-six percent saw reduced costs, but nearly as many experienced cost increases. So 38% saw benefits from AI, whereas "nearly" 26% saw cost increases from it. One could just as easily write the headline "More companies experience increased benefits from AI than experience increased costs" based on this data but that headline wouldn't get so many clicks.

I have a sneaking suspicion that the vast majority of the people raging about AIs scraping their data are not raging about it being done inefficiently.

Raw materials to inform the LLMs constructing the synthetic data, most likely. If you want it to be up to date on the news, you need to give it that news. The point is not that the scraping doesn't happen, it's that the data is already being highly processed and filtered before it gets to the LLM training step. There's a ton of "poison" in that data naturally already. Early LLMs like GPT-3 just swallowed the poison and muddled on, but researchers have learned how much better LLMs can be when trained on cleaner data and so they already take steps to clean it up.

I have no idea what "established means" would be. In the particular case of the Fediverse it seems impossible, you can just set up your own instance specifically intended for harvesting comments and use that. The Fediverse is designed specifically to publish its data for others to use in an open manner.

Are you proposing flooding the Fediverse with fake bot comments in order to prevent the Fediverse from being flooded with fake bot comments? Or are you thinking more along the lines of that guy who keeps using "Þ" in place of "th"? Making the Fediverse too annoying to use for bot and human alike would be a fairly phyrric victory, I would think.

A basic Google search for "synthetic data llm training" will give you lots of hits describing how the process goes these days. Take this as "defeatist" if you wish, as I said it doesn't really matter. In the early days of LLMs when ChatGPT first came out the strategy for training these things was to just dump as much raw data onto them as possible and hope quantity allowed the LLM to figure something out from it, but since then it's been learned that quality is better than quantity and so training data is far more carefully curated these days. Not because there's "poison" in it, just because it results in better LLMs. Filtering out poison will happen as a side effect. It's like trying to contaminate a city's water supply by peeing in the river upstream of the water treatment plant drawing from it. The water treatment plant is already dealing with all sorts of contaminants anyway.

I think it's worthwhile to show people that views outside of their like-minded bubble exist. One of the nice things about the Fediverse over Reddit is that the upvote and downvote tallies are both shown, so we can see that opinions are not a monolith. Also, engaging in Internet debate is never to convince the person you're actually talking to. That almost never happens. The point of debate is to present convincing arguments for the less-committed casual readers who are lurking rather than participating directly.

Doesn't work, but I guess if it makes people feel better I suppose they can waste their resources doing this. Modern LLMs aren't trained on just whatever raw data can be scraped off the web any more. They're trained with synthetic data that's prepared by other LLMs and carefully crafted and curated. Folks are still thinking ChatGPT 3 is state of the art here.

People have been doing this to "protest" AI for years already. AI trainers already do extensive filtering and processing of their training data before they use it to train, the days of simply turning an AI loose on Common Crawl and hoping to get something out of that are long past. Most AIs these days train on synthetic data which isn't even taken directly from the web. So go ahead and do this, I suppose, if it makes you feel better. It's not likely to have any impact on AIs though.

I mean, it's pretty obvious. They release good open-weight models. Western companies did that a little at first, but they've basically stopped doing that any more. It's really easy to win a competition when one of the competitors isn't actually competing.

On the one hand not fond of the CCP, and this is a step toward making Taiwan more "safely" invadeable. On the other hand not fond of the United States throwing its weight around like it's in charge of the world and not fond of monopolies in general. So hard to settle on a reaction for this.

It is interesting, IMO, that with AI we see the opposite of the usual trend; the fancy new disruptive technology seems to be liked more by the older crowd, and less by the younger ones.

For every news article you read? That's the point here. AI can allow for tedious tasks to be automated. I could have a button in my browser that, when clicked, tells the AI to follow up on those sources to confirm that they say what the article says they say. It can highlight the ones that don't. It can add notes mentioning if those sources happen to be inherently questionable - environmental projections from a fossil fuel think tank, for example. It can highlight claims that don't have a source, and can do a web search to try to find them. These are all things I can do myself by hand, sure. I do that sometimes when an article seems particularly important or questionable. It takes a lot of time and effort, though. I would much rather have an AI do the grunt work of going through all that and highlighting problem areas for me to potentially check up on myself. Even if it makes mistakes sometimes that's still going to give me a far more thoroughly checked and vetted view of the news than the existing process. Did you look at the link I gave you about how this sort of automated fact-checking has worked out on Wikipedia? Or was it too much hassle to follow the link manually, read through it, and verify whether it actually supported or detracted from my argument?
