@ERC_Research Any ideas as to the reasons for this sharp increase of ERC applications over the past few years? Scientists from the US trying to come (back) to Europe? Institutions pushing their scientists to apply (e.g. coupling promotion or tenure/tenure-track positions to a successful ERC application)? Lower barriers to writing an application thanks to large language models?

@UlrikeHahn Indeed, a very good piece, articulating aspects I've been chatting about with colleagues but could not express that well myself.

@SeanPLynch From the paper https://iopscience.iop.org/article/10.3847/2041-8213/adc1c8 "It is widely recognized that the detection of a biosignature is unlikely to be instantaneous or unambiguous in the first instance, rather relying on continued accumulation of evidence..." "Further work is needed to robustly verify the current findings. More observations are required to robustly demonstrate the repeatability of our present findings, rule out potentially unaccounted-for instrumental systematics, as well as increase the detection significances." Somehow these (reasonable!) cautious remarks do not square so well with the grandiose-sounding statements of the lead author as quoted by NPR. #k218b #JWST

@ct_bergstrom@fediscience.org Today I was at a town hall meeting of the #americanphysicalsociety . I was heartened to learn that they stick with their values and past statements on important issues even if that means they (we, I am a member) may suffer. There was a long line of questions and comments, including one Nobel laureate, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation and the need for action.

@Sheril@mastodon.social Thank you for sharing Max Roser's great graphics. I initially thought that "109 billion people have lived" must be a typo, given that the exponential population explosion was only a recent phenomenon. But apparently this is an official estimate. I guess the flaw in my thinking comes down to this: there may not have been that many people alive at any given time in the past, but the past stretches out for a very long time...
