Buying profiling data from Google is not nearly as effective at tracking and controlling your online activity as integrating facial scans and government ID checks into every website or even directly into your operating system. Frankly a brand new account pushing the “The government is already tracking you, there’s nothing you can do about it, don’t worry about all the new ways they can track you, just give in” narrative is a little suspicious.

It is in fact a government conspiracy to track you. Not necessarily to gather data on you, which can be purchased from brokers, but so that they can also control what you can access. There’s no mechanism that the government currently has that can track you as effectively as these age verification laws can.

Then they’re not volunteers. They’re PRN employees. What you have in your town is a paid, professional fire department. Volunteers on the other hand not paid. They don’t make a dime at any fire call. The law generally allows small, nominal cash rewards as incentives while still being considered volunteer, like awarding a couple hundred bucks at the end of the year for top responders, or a small dispensation of cash per call, but that’s it. More than 80% of the fire departments in the United States operate this way, with over 65% of firefighters in the country being unpaid volunteers. The firefighters in your town are not included in these numbers.

Most firefighters in the U.S. are volunteer, and make no money at all. Being paid per call is not the norm.

Volunteer firefighters are unpaid. That is what volunteer means in this context. They make $0. There are some places where they get tossed a few bucks per call, but most of them don’t make a cent.

I am no fan of reddit but in this case Reddit appears to have championed this users anonymity going so far as to actively draw the ire of the administration. Reddit refused to comply with the initial administrative subpoena the Federal government came back with this grand jury subpoena and warned Reddit not to disclose the existence of the subpoena or they’d consider it interference in federal law enforcement Reddit complied with this new legally binding subpoena, but did not comply with the demand to keep it a secret. In the contrary, they immediately alerted the user of the subpoena which allowed him time to immediately lawyer up. You’re not wrong that you’re not safe posting on Reddit, but if this case is any indication you’re not any less safe posting in Reddit than any other site, including Lemmy.

Signing it verifies that the software was made by company that it says it was. It’s a method to avoid installing fake or malicious software. It is on its face a good thing, with the major caveat being who is in charge of who gets to sign what.

The person they’re replying to was talking specifically about their Plex server and how av1 causes problems with it. If their Plex server is the thing that is having trouble with AV1, then it’s encode.

“Click button media plays” would be the bare minimum a media server does. Being able to play media at all does not elevate it above of its position at the bottom of the media player stack.

Yeah you’re going to need HW acceleration to encode AV1 on your server “without issues”. Theres a world of difference between something that’s technically possible and something that will just work without issues of any kind.

Neither of those things support AV1 encoding or decoding. Curious how you’ve come to believe you’re having “no issues” with a codec your hardware has no support for.

Net Neutrality was repealed in the U.S. in 2017. ISPs including your mobile phone carrier are allowed to throttle your bandwidth based on the sites you visit. When you use a VPN an tunnel your DNS through it to servers not operated by your ISP, they don’t know which sites you’re visiting, so any automated throttling would not happen.

As somebody who knows how DNS works, there are certainly cases where DNS servers causing a delayed response to requests will slow down the initial loading of sites. This would result in a layman thinking their wireless speed is “slow”

The result of which is the reason why FAANG as an acronym exists. FAANG is the resulting consolidation of the industry made possible by its widespread collapse.

I imagine they got courts and lawyers and motions and hearings and stuff over there, even if the fight is doomed you need to show your teeth once in a while. That’s not how it works. They can’t just refuse to comply with a lawful order from a judge. They could be put in actual jail.
