SMART data on some old drives, can anyone beat my powered-on times?

12 years and 11 months of powered-on time for this SSD… I should definitely turn it on for another month lol 10 years powered-on time for this HDD. Who says HDDs aren’t reliable? 😂 Anyone got better numbers than these?

I don’t see your post. I think in Brave you would have to click to expand the Sidebar in order to make a post for a phone I would suggest Boost, Connect, or Summit join-lemmy.org/apps

I joined discuss.online but is that the same as lemmy? yes that’s a part of Lemmy, that’s all you need I don’t understand the fediverse at all. The instances are confusing. It’s kinda like email. Think of it like you’re on Gmail, I’m on Yahoo Mail, and the pottery community is on MSN. We can all talk to each other because we do like @mangobanana@gmail.com (in reality you’re at discuss.online) and @die4ever@yahoo.com (I’m at retrolemmy.com). Usernames start with an @ like Twitter, community names start with an ! So when you do a “Local” search you only see stuff from “Gmail” like yourself, but usually you want to search “All” not “Local”. For viewing posts on my feed I prefer “Subscribed”, this can be set as your default in your settings page. have you tried an app on your phone? they can be a bit simpler to use than the website join-lemmy.org/apps here’s another community that might help !newtolemmy@lemmy.ca

when you search for a community, make sure you’re searching “All” communities instead of just “Local” communities this one already exists !pottery@lemmy.world

Many distros are now based on Debian Testing. I feel like they could come together and maintain a shared stable base, similar to what Ubuntu used to be for them. Kinda like the Open Gaming Collective guys did for their kernel development.

I think maybe it would be better to just tweak the Hot algorithm slightly. Maybe either adjust the curve, or use max(age, 1 hour) in the calculation so that new content is not favored quite as hard, aka new content is scored as if it were an hour old.

But you could make a dedicated discussion post asking about this, so more people can see

People don't talk about this enough, Lemmy's "Hot" sort is kinda garbage lol. It leans too heavily towards new posts. Same thing with sorting comments by Hot. "Active" is more in-line with what Reddit users expect, or something like Top 6 Hours. I haven't tested Mbin's "Hot" much. I remember a user on Reddit saying that Lemmy is dead because they looked at All+Hot and saw very few comments. On Lemmy right now I go to All+Hot and the front page posts mostly have 0 to 3 comments. All+Active is showing mostly posts with 50 to 200 comments. All+Top 6 Hours mostly has 5 to ~30 comments.

well you can keep using Lemmy, I'm just talking about suggesting to unfamiliar people. Lemmy and PieFed share content anyways so it doesn't matter which you use, you'll see posts/comments/votes/communities from both anyways

Lemmy v1.0 has suffered too much scope creep, this update is way late while PieFed runs circles around Lemmy

Lemmy wasn't ready at that time, it's much better now, but people won't give it another chance. PieFed is better now anyways and still increasing the gap, but no one knows about it. We need another big exodus somehow, and we need to send them to PieFed over Lemmy.

Hopefully we have ways to recycle the old chips. Some of the GPU chips could maybe be put on consumer boards? I've already heard of memory chips being recycled, except HBM of course. Of course a lot of these companies would probably just prefer to put them in a trash compactor lol.

One issue is I think Lemmy’s UX means there’s less friction with local communities than remote communities (not sure why) which is why usually the lemmy.world version of communities typically wins without a lot of effort to steer people

We really need better onboarding for new users, maybe ask them about their interests to give them a default set of subscriptions (it would probably just be a tweaked version of the community search page). And default to the subscribed feed, not the All feed
