@QuakerWanker@laserdisc.party from what i've heard, that'sargely how japanese cEDH plays out. a lot of what i'm talking about is about USAmerican cEDH and the discourse surrounding high profile gaffes, where people will act like critical issues are fine. rhystic is a funny microcosm of this because it's definitely too powerful for edh in general, but because it hasn't become a problem until recently, you have people that think its just something you can play around or is acceptable because it allegedly keeps certain archetypes in check, despite it being even worse in the format chock full of noncreature spells. minimum 50% play rate in casual games, a statistic we actually have thanks to edhrec, and up to 90% in decks that can run it in competitive (compared to much lower rates for combo win pieces!) is a bad sign to me for a card that bare minimum eats a counter spell or a removal spell, and probably draws a card too

@QuakerWanker@laserdisc.party yep! as it would normally be in a sanctioned format. as it stands, IDs aside, cEDH exists in a limbo state of technically supported by the rules but not officially sanctioned or competitively supported by wizards, so all kinds of stuff at events is in part downstream from this and the way TOs choose to carry out and judge events

@QuakerWanker@laserdisc.party it's kind of crazy reading people talk about how stacks are extremely complicated to resolve because people talk about who deserves to draw off one of eight rhystic studies/effects on board or not. like what are you doing

a lot of the problems i see with cedh discourse start with people going "well, it's not a problem in MY games" and much like how Temple of the False God is bad and Rhystic Study is far too good in light of that, culture problems like this warrant a hard look at how not only are tournament pointings rewarded, but how competitive players approach what is supposed to be the method of playing that is the most competitive, the most cutthroat, and the least concerned with the fractured and shifting mores of other brackets. when content creators and pros alike continuously go "fuck, man. something's gotta change" it's better for the health of the format to try and change it

people that have played a lot of commander and been enfranchised in commander culture for a long time have heard countless arguments about the spirit of the format. but one if the more groan-worthy things that comes up is when someone tries to "little guy" or deal make their way into a win at the lgs, or sometimes even in a friend group. like all things, its fun and okay in moderation, but when it becomes a common occurrence and routinely ruins top matches, often trickling down to casual play, you have a serious problem. no amount of bans or unbans can fix a problem with player's attitudes

cEDH players will tell you that if you don't uphold your deals, then you'll get shamed out of the format as someone that doesn't keep their word. it's ridiculous. any sensible player will know that if a deal is offered to them, it's solely to the benefit of the person offering the deal. any sensible player would turn down a deal or lie into one in order to maintain their postion and hopefully gain an advantage. keeping your word is for beer and pretzels matches, not a tournament where money is on the line, and certainly not in a game as complex as magic. in fact, any deal making leads to a worse experience for the other two players, as colluding right in front of them shows blatant disrespect for the game and the sportsmanship involved in four players each attempting to reach a win

cEDH has, as an outgrowth of the culture of commander in general, an issue with dealmaking and honor. the lack of competitive support from wotc has led to this weird competitive culture where players at the top of the tournament will make insane deals, spend multiple minutes talking about those deals, or kingmake other players in order to force draws. a competitive, "anything goes" format should not reproduce the negative play patterns that make pick up games at stores miserable. but people will see two players giving another one two free turn cycles and crow about "honor"
