I‘m a little bit confused because all of this is moving so quickly (and badly) when the EU is known to work slow. How do they even have an app ready so quickly? Even when it‘s trash. It‘s almost as if they act on the ‚wisdom‘: „Apologizing later is easier than asking for permission first.“ I get the impression they started working on this before any legislation was even proposed.

The whole business model of tech startups is to lose money until you cornered the market and make unfathomable amounts of money. By the time you realize „well shit, it really was the biggest heist in history“ it‘s already too late. They are too powerful to be punished for it. So this definition of yours plays right into their cards. The only saving grace here is that AI will never be profitable. But people said the same thing about Youtube and now it looks like Google might swallow Disney soon.

Classic fluff piece to make China look more innovative than they actually are. I wouldn‘t be surprised if we never heard of this tech or if they recycle the same article next year. Tech ‚journalism‘ about China is a mine field of false claims and exaggerations.

Since a lot of content creators got a copyright strike from this bad actor I am sure someone will fight this and win easily. Generally speaking it‘s a bad idea to steal someone‘s ad revenue if you‘re from a lawful country like Italy. They win some publicity but lose money from this.

What do you mean? The system already exists in Germany and whatever website or app asking if you‘re an adult will only get exactly that information. Not your face, not your name, not even your age. They will simply receive a verified Y/N from a government service. Needless to say no US company implemented it because they would miss out on a lot of sweet sweet data.

It‘s standard „China is 50 years ahead of us!!!“ type media coverage and a core part of Chinese propaganda. They always make these spectacular claims and by the time experts and peer reviews chime in to debunk it or at least express serious doubts there‘s already another wild technology breakthrough claim from China. They know it takes a magnitude of effort to debunk fake news so they‘re always faster than people who actually have to read through their often AI generated slop studies. Even when the tech is technically real it‘s usually blown out of proportions. Even when they accomplish impressive tasks they coat it in lies. That‘s just how Chinese propaganda operates. You have to doubt everything.

Initially I thought this was about the 30% but they mentioned a new two tier system so I looked it up. It seems Apple‘s App store fees are more complicated than that. For example they charge $99 annually for developer accounts which doesn‘t sound much but that‘s basically the entry subscription to even participate. I didn‘t dig very deep but it gets more complicated from then on.

It‘s not going well for the average Chinese worker in recent years from what I‘ve heard. The pandemic and crumbling real estate market followed by countries diversifying their economies away from China (albeit slowly) and Trumps arbitrary trade war aren‘t good prospects for China. Xi Jinping‘s rhetoric in speeches went from „prosperity for all“ before the pandemic to „prosperity in moderation“ to essentially saying people shouldn‘t expect anything at all in his „eat bitter“ speech last year and that was before tariffs. Order books are empty and unemployment is rising just like it is in many places of the world right now to be honest. These are economically turbulent times and export economies are struggling when nobody can afford shit.

I‘m not that deep into the technical aspects but Chinese companies that work with foreign companies would have to work with the government and other Chinese companies that control internet access in China to circumvent the firewall legally. The process is likely limited and heavily monitored by authorities. I imagine unless you‘re a big player it can be quite the hassle so many Chinese companies would rather work with domestic companies than with foreign ones. I think this is one major reason why many contracts with Chinese companies can only be done through middlemen. As an outsider, you can‘t get full access to their industry because you have no means of contacting all these little manufacturers yourself.

VPNs are banned in some countries. At least in practice. China comes to mind and please nobody tell me „I have a friend in China and they use one!“ That friend is either breaking the law, or a state agent or foreigner where that law doesn‘t apply. Hotels have that as part of their service for tourists because why the hell would anyone travel to a country with basically no internet? Of course they are exempt. But Chinese citizens are absolutely not allowed to use VPNs to break through the great firewall. The overwhelming majority wouldn‘t even know how. But of course most of them know at least one person who can. So in theory the law is useless but in practice it‘s very effective to control information. Whatever the case it‘s nothing a democracy should pursuit. Ever.

OpenAI isn‘t very good in any of those categories and they still have no business model. Subscriptions would have to be ridiculously high for them to turn a profit. Users would just leave. But to be fair that goes for all AI companies at the moment. None of their models can do what they promise and they‘re all bleeding money.

It will piss me off to give AI rights because it‘s not a living thing and we don‘t even grand billions of humans the same rights we enjoy in the west. We exploit them. The thought that a freaking soulless clanker walks among us with the same rights as you and me while children are starving, dying of thirst, are hurt in wars and don‘t have access to education and health care gives me the ick. How can we play god when we don‘t even look out for each other? Robots will replace us Terminator style if we don‘t get our shit together.
