I've said before that I think an increase in children being diagnosed with autism is good actually, not bad. This is not because I think more autistic people is better (although I don't think it'd necessarily be bad), but because, although it will be decades before we find out for sure, I strongly suspect it will correspond to a decrease in people being diagnosed with autism in adulthood. Which is to say fewer people having to wait decades for a diagnosis and therefore access to support. And that "access to support" thing is the same thing with trans kids. TERFs love to use the term "social contagion" to talk about supporting kids in pejorative terms, in order to deprive them of that support. In both cases, Wes Streeting, in his erstwhile capacity as Health Secretary, advocated forcing kids to deal with these things without support - which I can say from firsthand experience is torture. And so it needs to be shouted from the rooftops: Wes Streeting tortures children.

@cstross@wandering.shop I mean, plenty of people have, right out in the open, made excuses for why they don't have to listen to trans people. If they're worried about radicalism, maybe they shouldn't have shut down the more moderate approach. Recently I've been thinking that authoritarians want violence because that's a fight they can win both physically and morally, and they have a strategy of penning people in and putting the pressure on to engineer that outcome.

I've talked a lot about how the government and Starmer in particular say that children at an elevated risk of abuse should be exposed to the exact people statistically most likely to be their abusers. Because those kids are trans, that could be written off as simple transphobia in isolation.

But it's not in isolation. When it's combined with restricting children's access to the internet and the attacks on neurodivergent diagnosis among children, a pattern begins to emerge.

All of it is about isolating children from support in order to make them vulnerable. It is sad little abusive freaks bullying the most defenceless in society so that they can feel powerful.

The probability of winning the lottery is about 1/(45 million) so the probability of winning twice is that squared, or about 1/(2 quintillion).

@xgranade I bring this up a lot, but a government report in the UK just last year showed that parents are responsible for 55% of cases of emotional child abuse, and 82% of cases of physical child abuse, and also that trans kids were over 80% more likely to be abused than cis kids. That didn't stop the government pulling the same shit, though. Or the Prime Minister openly, publicly, and unequivocally saying that children at an elevated risk of abuse should be exposed to the exact people statistically most likely to be their abusers. It's an atrocity.

@mcc@mastodon.social It's the type of person who yells "You just can't handle disagreement!" at people who are specifically in the middle of disagreeing with them. Even though that makes no sense, they hope (and are, sadly, often correct, although less so on Mastodon) that by doing this, they can reframe the discourse to make them look 'reasonable' and their opponents look unreasonable, and in that way they can manipulate and dominate the conversation.

JK Rowling has made another crack about the "Gender Taliban." What a group that argues for more expansive autonomy has in common with the Taliban is anyone's guess, but that's not really the point.

It's not that deep. People call her a Nazi, and she figures turnabout is fair play.

But the difference is that JK Rowling is a Nazi. That is an accurate and supportable characterisation of her words and actions. To give a few examples, she shares with the Nazis an assumption that her authority is derived from biology, she made a full-throated defence of the Nazis' persecution of Magnus Hirschfeld, and she has contributed to the erosion of legal structures set up specifically to prevent Nazis from happening.

TERFs, like all fascists, are all rhetoric and no substance, so throwing out weird comparisons with the Taliban is as expected, but calling JK Rowling a Nazi is substantive.

Remember when the transphobes said they wanted the debate to be evidence-led?

Whatever happened to that? Now they're declaring that their assumptions are good enough, and going so far as to conceal or refuse to collect evidence.

Case in point: the Supreme Court ruling is based on the TERF dogma that "trans women are men" are therefore occupy the same economic position as men. A report from 2018 shows that 1/3 of employers would be less likely to hire a trans person, research from UCL shows that trans people are more likely to live in deprived areas, and joint research by Stonewall and Yougov show that a massive 1/4 of trans people have experienced homelessness (to say nothing of the HRC's US finding that trans women earn just 60% of what an average person earns).

But the silver bullet that could put the doubts to rest - mandatory pay equity reporting - well, the Government Equalities Office's official guidance is "eh, don't bother collecting that for the transes."

@Daojoan The thing that burns me up is that there is a relationship between education and class, but that is not an inevitability; it is a choice made by the right-wing. The left wants to extend the opportunity of education to everyone, and for that they're called elitist, while the people who insist on gatekeeping education as a privilege for the rich are salt of the earth. It's entirely backwards.

A social media ban does not protect children from the group most likely to be children's abusers and in fact increases that group's power over those kids. That doesn't sound like a great idea.

Children who have geographically distributed communities, whether that's because they belong to marginalised groups, or simply because they live in rural areas, cannot "just go outside" to get the community support they need, and even those not in that situation suffer from the total removal of facilities for them to use. You're lying because you love child abuse, and you are pretending it's "not abuse" because you don't want to be held accountable for loving child abuse. We see you.

@alice Just last year, in order to appeal to the anti-trans hate movement, Keir Starmer openly, publicly, and unequivocally expressed the position that children at an elevated risk of abuse should be exposed to the exact people statistically most likely to be their abusers. And so his insistence that this is about "protecting children" carries precisely zero credibility.
