@awb in the 1980s & 1990s, on proprietary Unix and on BSD, we had original sh shell, Bourne shell, Csh, an early kshell (if one was lucky, not yet universally distributed); somewhat later, zsh, bash, and mature ksh. In the later 1980s/early 1990s, some of us used SIOD.c "Scheme in one Defun" to embed Lisp/Scheme scripting into C/C++ programs, in environments that were emacs/maclisp friendly.
