New things I think learned from this thread: the thief used a blockchain provider instead of an ad-hoc local node, making all the transactions incredibly traceable with (unclear to me) implications about their ability to launder them or keep their identity concealed indefinitely. even if they are found out, the previous owners probably won’t see a dime back since the vulnerability affects exactly the ability to prove you really were the previous owner. Unclear which thief since the web3isdoinggreat writeup says there had been up to 15 unique groups doing mass drains by 31/7, maybe the initial 500 wallet sweep.

In a world where the AGI/ASI discourse wasn’t so heavily poisoned by anthropomorphization a discussion on whether agency and self-determination are integral to the rise of disembodied consciousness might be worth having, i.e. if something is recognizably conscious should we immediately assume it knows how to want, or is consciousness meaningfully interchangeable with awareness? Some guy tried to write a scifi book about non-anthropomorphic consciousness and he ended up mainstreaming the discourse about how the self isn’t a thing in itself and consciousness as an evolutionary deadend. It’s called Blindsight and it’s got space vampires who optimized reading gauges by swapping the usual moving-spike-that-points-at-numbers design with depictions of human faces at various stages of suffering.

We added it to make it clear that if you get harassed by the people who control whether you get your stipend you are on your own, so please don’t make it a big deal when it happens, ok? That just how it goes in these quirky and fun safe spaces that require you to move into a compound in a different city for extended lengths of time.

Ziz reported being asked similar icebreaker questions. The reddit post from /r/Grimes you linked there has its issues but it does a great job putting into words the parts that bother me with both the cow-fucking questions and the forced “openness” that requires people to always be ready to answer for the normally intimate parts of their personalities and how it’s comparable to grooming. That post is incredibly long winded so if anyone is interested in this part specifically ctr+f for compliance filter. Also super yikes on the Aella tweet advertising her alleged friend’s onlyfans that’s opening next week because that’s when she turns 18, which sounds exactly like if she had actually groomed a minor into sex work.

Need ideas for ways to spend philanthropy money without helping absolutely anyone? Check out AI safety influencer bootcamp at Lighthaven! Basically Aella gathered like 60 people with a seminotable online presence to stay for free at Lighthaven for a month as long as they managed to publish at least one relevant video (15 sec minimum) each day. Rationalism ensued: “It’s really hard to run a fellowship that’s not an indoctrination camp,” [cofounder with aella] Fernandez said. “If you don’t try really hard to not make an indoctrination camp, you will on accident.” Uh oh A fellow recognized me and asked whether I was there for the “torture potluck.” I had no idea what he was talking about. It was exactly what it sounds like: an all-you-can-tolerate buffet of unpleasant experiences, for the sake of Fucking Around and Finding Out. […] Just before midnight, a small crowd gathered around someone laid down on an AstroTurf-lined wheelchair ramp. He was the first of shockingly many in line to get waterboarded — one of the most in-demand items on the torture menu. So silly omg After a string of expected questions such as “What’s your take on AI?” and “What kind of content would you want to make?”, the form asked, “If you had to have sex with a cow would you rather it be dead or alive? Why?” All Comic Sans, with animated rainbow dots floating alongside the form field. […] [Fernandez said] “We added it in to make it pretty clear that we don’t have a PR department or an HR department,” he said. “Even the icebreakers, like everything, they want you to know that they’re part of the weird community,” one fellow told me. “‘Stand over here if you’re super sexually active, and over here if not,’ or like, ‘rate yourself based off of like, the last time you masturbated.’” The unifying thread, despite the fellows’ ideological diversity, is something like “openness.” Everyone at PDKU was willing to drop everything, move to Berkeley for a month, live in close quarters with strangers, and be perceived doing silly things on the internet. It’s really unclear what sort of ideological diversity is referenced unless it’s about having both blue haired and green goatee’d people. Maybe we’ve reached the point where everyone is expected to assume race science enthusiasts will be at a rationalist event at some capacity. Also the whole thing sounds like having tryouts for a cult. [Fernandez] says PDKU has a conduct policy, authored by him, that discourages relationships across power differentials. When I asked him how that gets enforced, in the absence of an HR department, he mentioned an unnamed community health lead. Same with the diversity thing, they are preemptively saying that there for sure weren’t no sexual harassment shenanigans this time. The third methinks thou dost protest too much comes as an extened NO U jab at other shady thinktankers trying to astroturf support for their thing. Amid the science communication, shitposting, and heartwarming summer camp energy, there’s a giant elephant in the room. “It’s another multi-million-dollar thing happening on a compound in California,” CJ said. “Does everyone think you’re just an annoying cunty psyop?” Don’t believe your lying eyes is apparently the note on which they chose to end this.

I’d say it’s all of that, plus the fact that a lot of the cult stuff are also present in how organised rationalism works in general so you need to believe that such a tradeoff can be mostly worth it, otherwise it’s time to really get packing. Although a more charitable read could be that the intended audience are people still under cult influence who need to be communicated to (in the most non-judgemental way possible so as to not trip any cult induced outgroup-o-phobia) that it’s entirely possible to feel you are in a situation with positive and productive elements that is also a fucking cult that is eating you alive. The extended framing of how ‘high-control literature’ applies to the MAPLE situation probably also caters to those sensibilities, most other readers probably already got that it’s a cult as soon as stuff like dear leader halting his daily two-hour speech when someone almost nodded off to make everyone stand up and stare at them in silence for ninety minutes started being mentioned. Or the constant surveillance and brainwashing. Or keeping everyone within a hair’s width from collapse from exhaustion at all times. Or the isolation retreats where your only human contact is a few minutes per week of getting told off by dear leader. Or . Having said all that, the positive aspects of MAPLE the author manages to come up with seem to amount to providing life structure and long term goals, which really doesn’t seem like much: Again I’ll say: there was a great deal of good at MAPLE. While many people were being impacted in the ways above, many were also becoming less anxious, more grounded, more relationally attuned, less distracted and more focused, more capable of doing chores and taking on responsibility without internal resistance, physically healthier, deepening in their spiritual practice, and more. Most people experienced some amount of the positive and the negative, which is a large part of why many former residents say their relationship to MAPLE is “complicated.”

no wonder the staff voted with their feet Rather than rebelling against google, it seems like they where just poached by anthropic a short while before the project shut down: Jumper [Alphahold VP and nobel winner] announced in June that he was leaving DeepMind to join Anthropic. A couple of his colleagues jumped ship to Anthropic, as well. DeepMind has confirmed to the Times that it also moved staff members internally to Gemini-focused projects. Other former staff members were reassigned to Alphabet’s drug-discovery company Isomorphic Labs, which is a DeepMind spin-off.

The AI bros are worried about the precedent that someone, anywhere, can tell them “no,” and make it stick. And others who hate vibe code might realise they too can say no. You can just ban the slop bros. I both love and hate that vibe coders are developing a perpetual victim mentality.

Their “Dev team of none” justification (one of many) is really solid and not something I’ve seen spotlighted before, here it is in full: The development team of none Using LLMs to work with your code gives you a kick of adrenaline. You can develop at a rapid pace, build things as if you had a large team. Only that you have none. In fact, you are (often) alone, working with a statistical machine that turns energy into code. It seems like many ‘vibe coders’ don’t realize that they don’t actually have a community around them. They build projects as if they had, and spend resources accordingly. We see projects having a lot of code activity, heavy CI/CD testing, frequent and large release binaries. Sometimes, it feels like the amount of supported platforms exceeds the amount of actual users. To us, it seems ridiculous to see projects with a single developer and virtually no users consuming as much or even more resources than some of the largest community projects on Codeberg, which operate frugal with CI/CD and storage resources. We do not believe it is reasonable for Codeberg to invest our precious donation money into hosting of large ghost projects.

I assume the personal perspective is him tacitly admitting to being attracted to skepticism for the debate bro culture, especially the parts that bordered on harassment. Even the inciting incident of “leaving rationalism” is framed more him growing out of the need to long-form debate someone (James Damore the google engineer who published a manifesto about how women don’t belong in tech). I don’t know the author so I don’t know if it is important that he was fine with pranking the timecube guy but decided enough is enough when it was time to take a pro-feminist side.

The Guardian published a William McAskill editorial in the what-if-the-stateless-text-generators-had-moral-agency genre of fiction, and Emily Bender did a thread From the article: But the sheer pace of growth in AI means that, once we produce the first artificial moral patients, we will soon after have enormous quantities of them. After a few years, so many morally significant AI systems could exist that their collective interests would outweigh those of all humans on Earth combined. Get fucked, Will. But also, if we grant the untenable sci-fi premise, this would be like a star trek episode where the federation cedes unconditionally to the expansionist alien fascists of the week if they have a much greater population because that’s all it takes to outweigh the other side’s moral concerns. Earth-Trisolaris Organisation-ass moral framework.

If the argument is that too much rationaltruism fired his brain then fine I guess. Otherwise I don’t think United Healthcare doing AI assisted fraud falls into any rationalist framework of doom, and also those people are allergic to direct action. Also the article is already setting the bar very high by using the Zizians, a sect that’s almost completely predicated on semi-obsure rationalist lore, as their first point of reference.

Attempting to credit Luigi’s actions to AI millenarianism putting him in a weird headspace almost feels like stolen valor. Still, if that’s where his mental health defence is going to hinge on then I guess it’s relevant. [Tim Urban] goes on to claim that ASI, with an IQ of 12,000, will eventually replace humankind as the dominant species on the planet: That IQ works like mana points is such a widespread misconception.

Was it really the sensible position that the poorest country in Europe would go on to embarrass an ostensible superpower? Predicting a Russian victory in the short term in the early days doesn’t seem too daring a hot take. It was mostly the analysts who were predicting a three day walk in the park with the ukrainians cheering them on as liberators that turned out problematic all the way.

Scott is hilariously uninformed Elsewhere he is comparing their orwelian chipset distribution control scheme to health inspectors making sure supermarkets don’t sell spoiled milk. He just says whatever as long as he thinks it’ll help convince more people than it drives away, and his fanbase goes along with it because they think that’s how you get to be the normie whisperer. This makes me feel there really is no telling what actual agenda the rationaltruists’ would enact if they ever get to actually dictate policy.

This is a classic rationalist fallacy that we see repeated throughout the piece of assuming that ultimately if you express the argument properly everyone will agree on the right thing This is complementary to their heterodoxy fetish, leading to fringe or outright bonkers but excruciatingly formalistic positions routinely sleight-of-handing themselves into prominence in the movement. It’s fine for AIs to get better at using valid arguments and evidence to convince people of things for the right reasons. That kind of persuasion is asymmetric: it works much better when the argument pushes towards the truth. That’s not how the postmodern condition works That’s just rationalists believing that once you amass enough IQ/Mana points you unlock the mind control spell. Eliezer Yudkowsky - who totally isn’t a cult leader He is definitely a cult enabler and a huge cult beneficiary, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen evidence he could lead shit to fuck.

If your property is outside the solar system, you will need to either go into cryosleep or upload yourself to a computer to survive the journey. Reminder that rationalists have developed a completely mysticalised conception of brain uploading that’s very functionally similar with old timey souls, mostly so they don’t need to deal with the SOMA problem of every instance of uploaded consciousness being a completely separate self-actualised entity. Like how exactly is a digital impression of my personality being shipped to alpha centauri to inspect my holdings affect my personal experience? How is it supposed to be interchangeable with using some other made up technology that takes me there in person? See, it works like this, no one knows what consciousness is, but it’s probably a mathematical object, and if your current conscious self is the same as the conscious self that will be inhabiting your body at a later moment in time, and also if a supreme being wants to torture you after you are dead…

Nothing in my interactions with humanities types indicates they would be in a better position to handle either the educational slopnami or a slopped out job market. As far as educational systems go, “human judgment, logic, and ethical reasoning” where always left to natural selection instead of being actively pursued. Taking a philosophy course on the history of logic an ethics isn’t the same as having any.

I like how Yud’s rogue data center air raid task force is gradually becoming another weird rationalist accepted truth.

There’s a corresponding siskind post also called something something plan A, I skimmed until the part where the US and China take de facto control of chip infrasrtucture and distribution (saying “nationalise” is haram for free market types), basically imagine having to write a letter to the government to formally justify upgrading your computer, and that’s all the AI fanfiction I can tolerate without ruining my breakfast. Also clanker crankers appropriating the term ‘Golden Path’ from Dune is just distasteful.

The Inside story of Leverage Research This should be interesting, it’s about an organisation in the EA milieu that even other EAs though it might be a bit too culty. Don’t know who the writer Lydia Laurenson is, but she does come off as a bit of a cult enthusiast herself, and is probably more than a bit rationalist adjacent.

Does anyone actually believe this? Current copium is that if it can solve Erdos problems after a fashion then the cancer annihilating molecular biology breakthroughs can’t be that far behind. Also since just shovelling GPUs and reddit posts into a data center forever probably won’t do the trick they’ve settled on the questionmarks on the list before Profit! being Recursive Self Improvement, meaning that since automatic code generation is somewhat improving it follows that pretty soon LLMs will just code themselves out of their current predicament of being unsustainably resource intensive hallucination machines and build AGI on their own.

Oh no: The Epstein Hysteria tl;dr: ephebophilia actually, just another criminal case nothing to see here, won’t someone think of the non-offending pedophiles and the privacy of the people in the emails especially those who even though they come off as obvious creeps who consorted with a known sex trafficker have not yet been found legally liable. Somehow doesn’t mention the sitting president of the USA even once…

The shrimp stuff is objectionable insofar as the brain bug that makes it so you think that if you add up enough shrimp you get the moral entity equivalent of a person because consciousness stacks is the same as the one that makes stuff like longtermism palatable, and also for making the animal welfare movement at large seem unserious.

I mean as far as I can tell he’s one of the least objectionable prominent rationalists, if only because his main thing is pushing an extreme position wrt animal consciousness instead of being a eugenics and incelism dabbler.

FDT is a largely half-assed^1^ attempt at working backwards from “the timeless multidimensional robot god can’t blackmail me from the future if I’ve already made up my mind about stuff, very strongly like” into something more formalistic so he can pretend to address roko’s basilisk without acknowledging it. I think there’s also some “here’s how two robot gods who can perfectly emulate each other might work things out” sprinkled in, but worse than it sounds. They never got back to the peer reviewers
