@joepie91@social.pixie.town @dee@grafana.social Yeah I don't know. Funding for social goods like this is really hit or miss in general. In theory, this would make a lot of sense as a government program - but in practice, I don't think that's going to work for most countries. I suppose if this intermediary is able to connect funders and maintainers, then they should be able to pursue their own funding? That probably has it's own set of perverse incentives, though... :/

@joepie91@social.pixie.town @dee@grafana.social Yup! It might also be responsible for setting up new maintainer organizations. And ideally, we'd have multiple of these things, and separate auditing orgs to make sure they actually do their jobs and don't just siphon off resources... It's a whole thing. :/

@mctwist@mastodon.acc.umu.se I wouldn't be so sure! I mean you can't do everything, but you can do some things! Maybe start it as like a side gig, give it a few hours a week, blog about it and look for feedback, see where that takes you?

I'd like to see more though - something to set up sister organizations in the same vein, and maybe supporting infra - organizations dedicated to checking open source projects to examine how well they're being maintained, or to finding security vulnerabilities in them, or to profiling their performance, or to creating organizations to provide support for particularly niche details details - the kind of thing that is suddenly urgent once a decade or whatever.

@dee@grafana.social I've been thinking about doing something like that for my game, once I get it going - aiming to have, not just modders and map makers and streamers and the like, but a whole ecosystem of people to provide support for them as well. No an easy thing to do though, so we'll see if I can manage it. XD

@dee@grafana.social Personally, I wouldn't mind taking a step back and funding an organization whose job it is to find problems like this and assemble solutions for them - find people to review all the core infra software and make sure it's supported, or assemble resources for the programmers of such, or a million other things. That's no small ask though - even just deciding what, exactly, falls within that area is quite a task. :/

@dee@grafana.social Thinking about this, and like - whose job is it, precisely, to ensure this kind of thing doesn't happen? That core infra like this has more support? Do we expect the government to do it? Corporations? Or if neither of them, (Not keen on either, personally), then who? Is someone going to go "This is my job, I will systematically review all open source projects and make note of the ones that need more support"?

@mekkaokereke@hachyderm.io Wow, that's so fucked up, its almost poetic. The police were so used to faking evidence to secure false convictions, they couldn't secure a true conviction. I guess the moral of the story is that if you have no respect for Justice, maybe Justice has no respect for you, and it slams the door in your face the second you actually want it. :/
