all the commencement speech talk is making me think grimly again of Bill Nye doing my (tech institute) class' speech, which I was over the moon about until he got up there and stolidly refused to acknowledge that a full quarter of the students in front of him were art and design students and not engineers lol

Papa Cardinal was out and about too! He and his mate have three nestlings in one of our arborvitaes that we think will fledge soon too, they're about four or five days younger than the wrens based on when we first heard peeping. We dump a lot of fall leaves in the once-was-a-garden above the driveway wall as part of our effort to tamp down invasives there, and it's a really good spot for caterpillar hunting hehe

(we call the two parent wrens The Krakens, and it's been apparently the same couple since we moved in almost three years ago. they love our screened porch and are the only birds who know how to get comfortably in and out, but during the winter we have to periodically Release The Krakens if snow builds up in their door gap)

this morning I watched one of the parents show two of the three how to squeeze under the porch door to head back to the driveway. the third was like "nah fuck that" and plopped themselves down between the wall and my watering can
yesterday the three Carolina Wrens that have been growing up in the rafters of our back porch fledged and then promptly shoved themselves into a miniature cave in our driveway wall
(rather rough telephoto shot through the screened window above my kitchen sink hehe)
