The established church at the time at its highest levels was in cahoots with the other powerful people of the time, utilising certain interpretations of those parts of the Bible that they could to enforce it. There is a big difference. It went downhill when the Roman Empire established Christianity as an official religion. Originally, Christianity was a counter-culture.
